    Cool Dec-Jan 2012 Compo Entries

First of all, a big thanks to everyone that's taken part.
Got 13 tunes ths time! And some proper tunes in there

For the newcomers who've not voted before, here are the voting rules :

After downloading the tracks, have a listen to all the tracks & pick your favourite 3 & list them in this thread:

    (Example)

    1st - Track 1
    2nd - Track 2
    3rd - Track 3

You can also comment on what you liked / didn't like about them, or comments on other tracks that you think should be said.

Just don't put any comments which are likely to offend. Nothing wrong with a bit of constructive criticism, but don't be outright nasty.

There have been a few new producers who've sent some tracks in so don't want anyone put off future compos by nasty comments.

And don't worry if you don't get any / many votes - I've been in compos before and had no votes, but it hasn't stopped me

Next rule is who can vote - anyone who has been a member since before the compo started & has at least 25 posts can vote.

No voting for your own track - obvious, but gotta be said.

    Ok, that's about it

Download Link for the entries :

    Dec-Jan2012_Compo_Entries.zip

I've up'd everything at 96kbs mp3 - main reason is that some of these will be coming out on future releases, so didn't want to up high quality versions.

Finally - voting ends when I get on the pc next Monday morning (16th Jan).

    Hope you enjoy the tunes

I have to say the standard has gone through the roof

Firstly well done to everyone who entered

I have listened to all the tunes and i have found it VERY difficult to pick just three tunes

Before i do my votes - i have a couple of comments on a few of the tunes.

Track 2 - I really liked this tune but that dirty bass for me spoiled it - i'm not a dirty bass fan in any tune - this tune would have got a vote from me otherwise.

Track 9 - I liked this tune too - it was mental but in a good way and very different to the other entries

Track 11 - A lovely happy piano/vocal tune but i thought there was too much piano throughout the tune.

Track 12 - I really liked this tune apart from the female vocal which was out of time. If the female vocal was at the correct speed or removed this would have been one of my favourites

There were quite a few tunes this time round with some wicked piano riffs so well done for that

    Right, now the votes

    1st - Track 13
    2nd - Track 4
    3rd - Track 6

    This concludes the Irish vote

I too found this abit of a head scratcher... Not because i have terrible dandruff (i'm a slaphead) but because all the tunes were excellent

I'm not going to review any of the tracks because i'm crap at things like that but there is one stand out track that to me was damn near perfect & got an instant 100% yes from me (Louis Walsh style) & whoever made it... Fair fucking play

    Aaaaaaaanywho's... Here's my votes:

    1st - Track 13
    2nd - Track 6
    3rd - Track 8

    Mahooosive respect to everybody involved

Some mint tunes in this lot.... given them all a proper belting through the Sennheisers & the results are as follows....

    1st - Tune 4
Deffo' rating this, has all the right ingredients for a quality old skool tune.... rollin' baseline, quality stabs, nice floaty bit in the middle & that sinewave noise goin' on too. Good use of the rapping style samples in the first half then the female vocal in the second half.
My guess is this is RG's tune, those stabs sound right out of his stable & the production is top notch...

    2nd - Tune 13
Really can't decide whether this should have been first or not as it's also quality. Sounds right out of '92 which is all that needs saying.

    3rd - Tune 12
Don't agree with Prim that the female vocal is out of tune? This sounds like JMT to me.... nuff said!

Also props to Tune 5 as it came a very close 4th. Simple but effective tune, nice use of those Prodigy chords or whatever their name is & that 'Drop The Bass' sample before BOOM!!

    Well done everyone else too...

I think I'm still in time to vote?! I downloaded these on Friday and had a listen through. First off, brilliant production all the way through. Not one tune was a real dud; all were high value productions with creative and appealing ideas. Okay, after much tooing and fro-ing and ahhhhs and ohhhhhs and a bit of.... Here are my top 3:

#1 Track 4 - had so much movement and action to it, a real rollercoaster of sounds coming at you. Just the way I like it. Immense BPM and instantly grabbing your attention. The amazing floaty breakdowns were class, loved the vocal underneath it all, added to the dreamy hallucinogenic quality of the moment. Fast gnarly breaks with time-stretches and I think flanged beats really hit the percussive spots for me....love this tune. Brilliance personified! Those slowed down Hip-Hop samples were wicked as well!

#2 Track 13 - very bubbly riff and I like the way it played itself through the track. As Thrash mentioned very 1992! Always going to get the foot tapping and the brain excited! A solid and delicious tune with a slightly faster pace to a lot of the others which suits me!

#3 Track 8. Although tough one to decide. Track 12 was great but I didn't like the vocal use. It just didn't work for me and stopped it from getting this slot. I decided after much deliberation (haha...I feel like head of the commity!! ) that Track 8 should get the vote. I liked the Scientist: The Bee-like break and the more unconventional sounds just caught my imagination. In the end the result was one of curiousity and then enjoyment. Kudos to whoever produced this, something different and thought-provoking.

All in all brilliant offerings; spoilt for choices really, it wasn't easy to pare it down to a top 3 I can promise you! Honarable mentions to the other entries.......I tell you what I look forward to future contests - maybe even being able to enter them too! Nice one da krew of all-about-kangeroos!

And this concludes Planet Mars' vote!

I'm getting good at calling these.... RG & JMT deffo' have a recognisable style.

Who is this Remnant dude? I quite liked his tunes in both competitions.

Let's just say it's someone who is on the forums, but is using an 'Artist' name so that you don't know who it is.

Hmmm, maybe I'll do something totally different next time to confuse you

A superlative suggestion with just one minor drawback.... it's me that puts the cds together, so I may notice
