I Really Need To Get Back Into Mixing

It's been such a long time since I did any mixing of any kind. Before Christmas in fact when I was asked to do a mix for a Trance Blog.

I really miss it and my decks are gathering dust (not literally as they are covered to stop dust accumulating...it's just a figure of speech)

It's just finding the time to turn them on and get them running.

I need inspiration to get some proper mixing time in.

    Inspire me please

I'm not sure this''l inspire you - but i was sort of in the same boat. I'd done the odd House set for peeps on request but wasn't that interested. Then my mate txtpest started ripping some old tapes i'd done & sent then to me. After listening to a couple i realised how much i loved my oldskool and started getting back into it, albeit on the PC (cue dodders finding IAAO).

I then borrowed some 1210's so i could rip my vinyl and started having a little mixaroo. Strange really - i was a bit nervous about getting back on decks but within 5 mins it was like i'd never been off them (riding a bike).

Problem i've got now is my mp3 collection far outstrips mine and my mates vinyl so i've got quite bored with it and have gone back to mucking around with Traktor. Question: is Serato a suitable present to ask for on your 40th Birthday.

Anyway, the moral of the story: have a listen to some old sets. You might get the same urge i did - or you might hear a mix and think "i could've dropped this into that" etc. Trust me, all you've done is fogotten how much you enjoy it.

    Cheers Dodders.

I don't mix the oldskool stuff anymore (I haven't since the latter half of the 90's...shame really as it would be kind of a nostalgia thing for me)

Over the years it's been a mix of House & Trance, and now it's purely Trance and it's many sub genres.

But like you, I just seemed to lose the interest which I thought I'd never do (I use to play on my decks 4 hours a day, every day)

The last time I did some really serious work on my decks is when I was going to China to do a DJ'ing gig over there in 2006. Loved every minute of it.

But apart from before Xmas, it was a couple of times every couple of months and that's it really.

It's not about the mixing mate, it never is, it's all about the music and as long as you are enjoying it, that's all that really matters.

Trance is down at the moment though and probably won't be back up till I get back from China in October (I've run out of money)

Once the site goes up mate, there has been a massive influx of Older Trance gone up (Pre-97) so you may want to check it out.

If you have any requests for anything, then let us know and i'll see what I can do for you.

Mate i was the same. Used to play a couple of local pubs over the weekends. I'd spend a couple of hours preparing my set, then play for 4 hrs, then as soon as i was done it was all back to mine, set the decks back up and off we'd go till god knows what time!

I went to a pool party last weekend and was asked to do a couple of Cd's for it - funky/cheesey house mainly - songs for the ladies if u like. No real heavy mixing, just nice & easy - so it all worked. (I'd post them up in here but i'm not sure i could take the abuse). Got a few compliments from the girlies but u take it with a pinch coz u don't know how clued up they are.

Anyway, a couples of gay guys my missus knows turn up. These boys are A-Typical gay clubbers - out all weekend every weekend and know how to have a good time (in the clubbing sense) - proper know their stuff. Next thing i know its all "wicked tunes, can u sort me out a copy" etc. Now that i got a proper buzz from and first thing i did the next morning was crack on with some house mixing.

As i'm sure Curly & Swipez will testify to after the last couple of weeks (and i'm sure u know yourself) there's no bigger thrill than getting Kudos about your mixing than from people that understand what you're doing and it just made me want to get back into it even more.

Get them posted up fella. I'll take a listen if no one else will.

And you are right, there is no better buzz in the world when someone compliments you on what you are doing.

When I DJ'ed in China and I saw all those folks dancing to what I was playing (they weren't use to Trance and in some cases, it was the first time they had ever heard anything like it) it was such a fantastic feeling, one of the best ever. You knew that what you were doing was working it's magic on people.

I'll do a deal with you China - you get your decks up and running, and I'll give you a slot on our show - if that doesn't inspire you, nothing will

Consider it a returned favour for this site

    I don't do Oldskool

But, I might just do a one off special mix and send it to you to play on your show.

Like thrash says, oldskool all the way. Surely you love oldskool running this place. Do you still listen to oldskool at all china? Maybe try to get a fortnightly spot on a radio show would give you the inspiration just look at the buzz it's gave swipster and curly

Don't get me wrong here, I love my oldskool (hence the site) but I just moved on to other things, rather than going back all the time.

I still listen to sets and stuff for old times sake and to bring the memories back, but I just don't mix with it any more.

But, you may be happy to know that tonight (when I should have been having my Chinese lesson) I fired up the decks, got a couple of record boxes down from the loft, blew the dust off some of my vinyl and did a quick 30 minute session to get a feel for oldskool mixing again. It's like riding a bike so perhaps you may just hear a guest mix on that show some time in the future.
