    Mixing Oldskool

If mixing oldskool what kind of things do you drop/avoid to make sure you don't sound like one of those awful mainstream CD's? Can you drop Baby D I need your Lovin? [I always thought the NRG one was far better]

Using your Baby D as an example: i'd play it if asked but wouldn't dream of it normally. Not because its an anthem, but because its shit.

As for the rest - as long as u ain't dropping them every week then why not? Plenty of "underground" tunes that members on here would consider "Anthems" but wouldn't make an MOS comp in a million years. Tis all subjective if u ask me

if your gonna play one of those cheesy tunes play a rough deep one into it, don't play two cheesy tunes together or you have a cheesefest, and no-one like a cheesefest

I LOVE playing anthems, they're the tunes that got me rushing at a rave and if mixed right and the tune selection is there, you can build a really good set of anthems.

If I'm gonna do an anthem bashing set, I always try to break them up with a rare tune here and there.

Mixing oldskool hardcore can be a nightmare as there's lots going on in a tune and they change substantially through the track. The golden rule really is know your tunes inside out so nothing takes you by surprise.

I reckon it depends on where your mixing and to what audience. If you have a set on kiss fm you may wanna drop a few classics as the listeners may wanna hear more commercial old skool than say the listener base of eruption or origin. It's also down to your own style of set. Many DJ's get booked for playing commercial old skool sets and others vice versa.

    like already been said....
    just learn your tunes.
if your using vinyl you can see where tunes break down etc and same for things like serato and traktor you can see the waveform on the screen
and if your just mixing at home play whatever you like whether it be big anthem or a track thats so underground moles are dancing to it...

    JUST PLAY WHAT YOU LIKE!!!

Depends who you're playing to, if it's a crowd that know there tunes i'd be less inclined to drop the over done anthems. If it's a mixed crowd i'd drop a few well known anthems

Anthems get the crowd moving, if nothing else drop a few now and again to get the "casuals" jumping!

im happy to have 'anthems' dropped all night!!!

so long as not the same ones every 30 mins!!

all this "anthem free" bollox is a cleshay now said by fuk wits that think they are more elite than everyone else. most of whome either wernt there bitd.... or just jumping on the ban wagon to try and look kool cos they got fuk all idea what the vibes were about and think that tunes that no fukka has ever heard of and owned by about 3 people are better cos if it

    to be quite honest.................

after over 20 years of listening to 'oldskool' im all but sick of it, the people that think its still kool to like it and every fuk wit that thinks they elite cos they have heard a tune that was only a dubplate that 2 people owned and wernt all that good..... yet hardly went out bitd and when they did they only went to look kool.

it will always hold special places in my heart, mind ans soul and it deffined me............. but the 'oldskool hardcore' scene lasted 3 years MAX.. and i been on oldskool forums 10 years now.... and run a 'mainly' oldskool pirate radio station for over 6 years... im fuked off with the attitudes of people now.

    DUB STEP ME UP!!!!

and if there any kiddys reading this........

Why you being elitist against elitists Puffa? jokes...

I do find alot of anthem tunes to be a bit, well, shit. Not all mind you, but alot. I do realize though if i go out and only play tunes that are my favorites they may not go over in a mixed crowd as well. You have to mix them in with anthems to get the crowd pumped, then maybe if you drop some super ruff shit they may be more receptive!

As far as the dubplates go, i do come more from a junglist POV but many many tunes had their best versions duplate only. Like i said though, 94/95 was all about the dubplates so thats a bit different.
