You got it then, nice 1We'll have to have a pre-amnesia / starlight mix [music]
I'm not sure how you record with the serato software, have only ever used it a couple of times round a mates

Couldnt agree more - Ive recently sold my CDJ800's and moved to Serato - havnt looked back since, already paid off at the parties/clubs ive been at due to having the entire collection there.
From what I see, the native record function in Serato is intended for sampling from real vinyl/CD or the mic, but not for recording an entire set.
If you want to record your set, best bet is to use another soundcard+program (i use soundforge, or you could try Audacity, it's free) or another recording device.
Yep just did a quick bit of reading on Serato's site - looks like SL3 does it, but SL1 does not, as above it has the ability to 'archive your vinyl'

BTW - heres Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - FREE!![]()
arr, i just got my traktor scratch... and now i'am thinking to send it back to switch to serato...
the reason is: http://www.serato.com/thebridge
awesome!!!
Bridge looks impressive, may even have to upgrade my 'ableton lite' for this puppy

Yeah I've tried an external soundcard but it keeps making my laptop blue screenOriginally Posted by Menis
it might be a case of a faulty soundcard so gonna send it back and try another. Any tips as to what soundcard to get? The software I'm using is cool edit.

ah this is a common thing with windoze apparently. because the serato hardware is essentially a usb soundcard windows doesn't like another usb soundcard being used so sometimes crashes.
luckily mac's do things differently and no such conflicts arise.
if you've got another recording resource i'd use that. minidisc for example...i've got a couple of portable minidiscs and i'd be more than happy to give you one of em if you want. i'll bring it along to the forum bash if you do. not the best solution, but it's something i guess.
Thanks a lot mate, I would appreciate that. Then you tell me what I've got to do to set it up and that cos I really haven't got a clue on PC's! How does the mini disc work then?Originally Posted by haze

basically...it's like a little cd in a plastic case. has the same audio quality and length (74-80mins) as cd too.
it was basically sony's own format that was killed off by the emergence of mp3 players.
i bought a couple of portable ones years ago for recording gigs and general walkman type use before i got an ipod.
i still use em for the occassional recording job when i dont want to plug my macbook in.
tis really simple to use and wont take me 5 mins to explain at the bash.
Thanks mate!Originally Posted by haze
One more question Sy. If I got a Mac, would that solve my recording problems? what are the advantages of having a mac? That's 2 questions actually![]()

like thrash said. they're just rock solid and stable.
had my macbook coming up 3 years and i can honestly say it's only crashed on me once. still as fast as the day i got it too. os x is just so realiable if you're doing any processor heavy stuff like audio, artwork or video
Serato!
And the new beta version of the software has some good alternative screen views. Especially if you like checking the album artwork to identify tunes....really a nice switch.
I tend to be very visual when it comes to remembering which tune is which....so I am loving it.
Always wanted to have a go on Serato unfortunately all my friends use Traktor so haven't had a chance to yet.
+1 to the Serato crew.![]()
I've had mine for about 4 years now. It's the best bit of kit I've ever bought and even now I still get a buzz knowing I've got thousands of old skool tunes to select from.
I recorded all my vinyl to wav and then converted to mp3 and then sold the vinyl for a tidy profit. It took me over 18 months but it was well worth it.

It should be relatively easy.Originally Posted by Curly
Has your PC not got a built in sound card? I'd be surprised if it hasn't, almost all PC's come equipped with a basic sound card. If so, you should find three minijack (headphone) sockets on the back of the PC. One is for headphone/speakers, one is for microphone and the other is line-in. You want the line-in socket. Connect the monitor or recording output from your mixer to the line-in socket on your sound card. You will most likely need a phono to 3.5mm minijack cable or a phone cable with a 3.5mm minijack adaptor on one end - you buy either for a few quid on ebay or in Maplins.
Once you've hooked up your mixer to your line in socket you need some audio recording software. Audiacity, Wavosaur or Cool Edit Pro are free to download, of those I'd say Cool Edit Pro is the best. I use Adobe Audition which is like an upgraded version of Cool Edit Pro and will let you save direct to mp3. Then - fire up your decks, mixer, Serato and your recording software, hit record and start mixing. You might have to play around with your input settings in your recording software, once you know the signal is getting through and it's recording ok - you're good to go.
edit - whoops, just seen that you're using a laptop. Hmm. In that case you might not have a line-in socket. If not then it might be worth buying a cheap desktop PC to record your mixes. You could probably pick one up for <£50 on Gumtree or ebay.

Serato gets the thumbs up from me too! Been trying out v2 of the software for the last couple of weeks radio shows, no probs so far. Using one of the more compact layouts to leave more space for browsing tunes. Tried out the MIDI support tonight too, hooking my keyboard up to trigger samples and use the new effects from v2.0, very cool.

I have tried recording on Serato, using a Mac, but the levels seems sooo high. and it just distorts.
I have the output level from my monitor turned right down to the bare minimum which reduces it a bit and then I have the gain on Serato record function turned all the way down but it still distorts a little bit when somne heavy bass comes in.
I have my amp turned up to max because the mixer output is so low and still it distorts.
I have wired it up as per the instructions, I have 2 master outputs and Master 1 goes to Serato and 2 goes to the amp.
Any ideas ?
i use this program
http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.p ... o-Recorder
It's Tiny , it's freeware and it's only 299 KB's in size !
uses fuck all memory to.
i just have my record out from mixer plugged into my line in on my mac
make sure that Line in is selected in audio settings
then set the input level as appropriate
