    Traktor Kontrol S4

Anybody used Traktor before or have any opinion on this piece of kit soon to be released? I'm thinking of taking up mixing & looking for the best options....

I've used Traktor for years and i love it. Always seemed more professional than VDJ imo. This looks like it could be quality - tho a bit on the steep side price-wise.

I've got VDJ but don't really rate it too much if I'm honest.... wanna' get a bit more involved & this new Traktor piece of kit is what my DJ mate (who uses Serato) is recommending I get? I don't mind chucking a grand at it either as decks, mixer & serato etc would cost more & as I don't own any vinyl, would be a waste of time in my opinion.

So how long do you reckon' it would take me to sharpen up the mixing skills? I've used VDJ & Ableton quite a bit so I'm not a total novice....

Well if you've been using Dj software then you understand the principles - so the only thing you've got to get to grips with is pitch control - and i'm guessing if that poses a problem then Traktor would've stuck a sneaky cheat in there for the new kit.

If u wanna have a look at the last version of Traktor let me me know and i'll do you a sneaky up.

I suppose it's all the buttons that look quite daunting as you don't have anywhere near as much choice on VDJ.... this will be like using a proper mixer etc.

Cheers for the offer of the upload but I reckon' I'm just gonna' bag it when it comes out & then learn it all from scratch (no pun intended)!

All you need to know is where your volumes are, what your crossfader is and how to swap your headphones over - all the rest is icing mate - but bloody good icing!

VDJ & Traktor - a big debate IMO, too cut and thrust for others.

I'm a big supporter of VDJ for the following reasons:-

    Simple interface
Very clever bit of kit (e.g. I don't need extra software to stream my radio show - it all comes in the package)
Nice 'rawness' about it when connected to a bit of hardware
    Certain versions are very stable.

The obvious points against it are how unprofessional it looks, but there are thousands of skins to touch it up cosmetically, and some of the later versions are liable to crashing.

I used Traktor once and was impressed with it, but it took the DJing element out of it if you know what I mean (it's bad enough "DJing" mp3s as it is )... like it's sort of too technical, as is Ableton, although I'm pretty sure that China-Rising swears by it.

If you know what you like Thrash, then go for Traktor by all means; seems you're unimpressed with VDJ and I can see your point(s), but I don't think you'll ever get the real feel for DJing unless you're using Serato (which funnily enough, isn't about owning loads of vinyl but the feel of using it), which when combined with a decent set-up you're probably looking at the best part of £2K

To be honest although you know I'll help you as much as I can, I half-arsed got back into DJing and chose the cheaper, simpler option of VDJ, a few bells & whistles and a Numark Total Control (which I don't cheat with ) which is just right for my hardware needs, although Puffa keeps urging me to upgrade, I have to say I'm very content with my lot.

Curly's opinion here would be better as he's never mixed before, took it seriously, invested well with a lot of advice and look where he is today just 8 months down the line

@ dodders, I wouldn't mind having a looky-lou at this new Traktor business, any chance of a gander?

No worries fella. I'll get it up sometime tonight & PM u. Just to make sure u haven't already played with it, this is what i'm upping:

NATIVE INSTRUMENTS : HOME | HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE FOR MUSICIANS, PRODUCERS, DJS, GUITAR AND BASS PLAYERS

Not sure how much you read but you can do all this with the new Traktor and even the one i'm sending you. The same applies with this tho - Traktor mod plus decks & you're looking at best part of 2 grand.
Question: quite new to this side of things so i might have got the above wrong - but the wheels on the mod, do they not act as turntables?

Initially, I thought it looked too cluttered but that does look a nice piece of kit - awful jog wheels though

Some very nice holes to put things in around the rear too

Then I saw the price .... you could pick up a decent pair of 1210s & Serato for that!

    I'm with swipezster on this
I've got VDJ and think it's fantastic to be honest.
have tested Traktor and didnt warm to it. Not as intuitive in my view.

I use it with Total Control. If you're using Traktor with Serato or something then that's different of course, but in terms of software, I cant see what issues people have with it.

Sure, VDJ doesnt have some of the cut/sample/loop features that Traktor has, but neither does a traditional mixer with a pair of Technics, but nobody would say that was crappy.

I'd love one day to buy a controller that has a more deck-like feel, where proper scratching etc is possible
Still though, for someone that no longer has room for vinyl, VDJ has been just right.

The S4 is new to me, but at present.
I'd like to see how well the scratch plates work.
For now, I want to test the new Numark controllers. Nice big wheels.
Trouble is, the controlers are probably too big for what I want. This S4 looks nice and compact.

Unfortunately within the space of a week the bastard VDJ has let me down "live" 3 times (stability issue), I'm seriously looking at Traktor again now.

Thing is with VDJ it's like a pair of comfy slippers; I've used it quite a bit now and it's all I'm used to. And even though it's falling apart at the seams I'm struggling to get rid of it.
ATEOTD I think it'll be exciting and fresh to use something else instead

As much as i swear by Traktor (carenot what u boys say about VDJ, traktor is FAR more proffesional) and i think its a lovely piece of kit, i'm really not sure how much of this i'd use. I play around with the loop buttons on my software and add the odd sample here and there but i certainly wouldn't be going to the extremes that the boys do on these vids.

As the Bingo caller rightly pointed out, its a big chunk of moolah that could be spent elsewhere.

Do you have decks or CD Decks Dodders?

Good question. I have 1210's sitting here which aren't mine but i've got them on a semi-permanent basis - so my obvious choice would be Serato.

But there's always the chance that they could be taken away from me at any given time, hence my interest in this and similar kit.

After chatting to a certain Bingo caller about this, i'm kind of leaning toward getting Serato, which if i'm right, would knock me back £400-450, and then maybe getting a controller mod in the region of £250-300, just in case it goes tits up with the decks. All in, it would work out the same as the Traktor mod.

Saying all that i'd listen to any suggestions u or anyone else may have.

So you would get Serato to go with the decks you have now?

I like the look of Serato, but i'm not really in desperate need to have that feel of vinyl again.

I generally don't mix with Vinyl anymore, preferring to use my CD Decks instead. It is good to use Vinyl every now and again, but CD decks have all the features decks had but without the Vinyl. Although saying all this, if I want I can get Serato with the coded CD's instead.

If you don't fancy spending money on the full and complete set up, then I guess what you are planning on doing is the best way.

I really want this bad boy next:

Pioneer CDJ2000 CD/MP3/USB Player & MIDI Controller with 4GB USB Stick

Have you had a look at this place Dodders? DJ Equipment, Digital DJ Equipment, DJ Mixers - decks.co.uk they have lots of packages and controllers ect. You may want to check it out for all your equipment.

CDJ's did cross my mind but it would be an added expense that i don't need - especially the bad boys that you're looking at

I'm not looking to start playing out with the kit. Its purely for me & the odd private party. Oh, and of course, Worldwide Internet Radio domination.

I enjoy mucking around on the software but i don't feel like i'm doing myself justice, especiallly when, apart from the occasional added loop, i could do exactly the same, if not better on a set of decks - and i do miss the buzz i get from playing vinyl, digitally or otherwise.

As for the mod, i'd use that if i wanted to record a good quality, planned set - with a few added loops & samples. All bases covered, so to speak.

And if it all goes Hong Kong and i lose the decks, then i'll still have the mod and can sell Serato.
