what size is your hard drive?

I'm going to be doing some laptop dj'ing and want to see how big a hard drive I'll want. There is an identical laptop to the one I have now and will probably be able to get it for around 40 quid, it has a 40 gig harddrive. will that be sufficient for around 5000-10,000 tunes or should I get a separate external drive of say 500 gig? Possibly better/less chance of it breaking if it's built in. advice appreciated

    Depends on the quality of the tunes (wav / 320kbs mp3 / 128kbs mp3).

Personally I've got 3x 1tb drives internally, 1x 500gig back up drive, 1x 1tb back up drive - but they store everything - not just tunes.

Also got 2x 1tb external drives full of films / tv shows.

Got the 2 x 1tb internal ones cheap earlier in the year - £43 each from amazon (Hitachi) - very nice drive.
Went to get another one & found they're now £95!! Got one off ebay the other day for £78 - still too dear, but a lot of other drives I won't trust anymore.

The 500gig one was a pressie 2 years back.

The external ones were around £45 off ebay.

Better to have plenty of space than not enough

    I've got:

    4 internal 1TB drives
    6 External drives (3x 500GB & 3x 1TB)

What can I say, I've got a hell of a lot of stuff

But you will need a 320 or a 500GB minimum. Although personally I would just use an external and keep your internal one for your programmes etc.

    I've got
    160GB on my one laptop
    100GB on my other laptop
2 x 2TB externals, one is for films & the other is for music
    1 x 1.5TB spare

If i was you i would get a 1 or 2TB external for your music & just copy what you need for any given time to your PC or laptop

I thought this thread was gonna say how big is your "Hard-On"

I think it's appropriate then that the last person to post was Mr. Horny

The only external I trust is the old style WD Elements drive -

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-Exttrnal-Drive/dp/B001GO9ERE/ref=sr_1_26?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1324216733&sr= 1-26

Metal with rubber feet - got 3 of them and all have been fine for years.

Steer clear of any that are plastic (as they get hot and stop the thing working after several months) or anything with 'green' mentioned as they turn themselves off after a few secs, and the repeated on/off kills them off after a few months use.

The WD Elements (Metal) one isn't available new anymore so look out for 2nd hand ones on ebay - got my last couple for around the £55-65 mark.

my home pc has 4 x 1tb drives, not that i even need all that space

    first is for my OS
    second for music
third for music production stuff (projects and samples etc)
    fourth videos

id prob say over all four drives only around 750gb is used

if your planning on djing in clubs with a laptop make sure its a macbook pro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the amount of times ive seen a crappy laptop running windows fail in the middle of someones set is funny, well not for the guy trying to dj
anyway......makes u look like a right daft arse, only seen a macbook fail once in a club,
when i have had gigs in the past couple of years i now use my serato with a macbook pro and still carry just enuff vinyl to cover me for an hour if technology fails me i also still bring my cd wallet with enuff tracks to play so i cant be caught out and look like the said daft arse
40 gig is sufficient if your only doing 1 to 2 hour sets in a club.

i just up graded my laptop so i've got 500gb on that and an external 500gb , i thought when i upgraded my laptop i wouldnt need the ext drive but its amazing how quick u collect songs samples and stuff, if you have the space then u will find some thing to fill it , and as posted above depends on file type n size but even if its wav files ( these much better on big rigs then mp3's ) you can get roughly 70 mins of play time for 700mb , so i would say u could get 35 plus hours of tunes, but i always leave a few gig spare the laptop seems to run smoother with a bit of free space and usb strorage is cheap now days (always back up flash drives they can fail after a bit of wear n tear )
