    Burning DVDs

I am a complete numpty when it comes to burning DVDs. I've tried burning avi files to a blank DVD, but they won't play on a standard DVD player.
Can someone point me in the right direction of how to convert a video file (if neccassary; heard they have to be vob files????), and decent DVD burning software - not Nero - I downloaded it and now can't get rid of it in my registry.

Thing is I've got a load of films on my HD and have just bought a new super-duper DVD player with the dogs' 5.1 dolby surround

    Re: Burning DVDs

Nero is what I use - well, Nero Vision Express.
    Very easy to use.
Load it up, say u want to make a dvd.
Point it to the avi file(s).
U can then add menus if u like, or remove menus all together.
& finally press the relevant button to automatically convert everything & burn it to a normal dvd which can be played on your dvd player (does take a good hour or 2 though).

    Or.....

Buy a dvd player which plays avi files (which is what I did a couple of years back) .

    Or....

I'm gonna be getting one of these new gadgets (for my birthday) -

    viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6679

Already got a tv which is HD ready & has a HDMI port (better than scart) & this device then plugs into an external drive (which I got last xmas) & u can bung all your downloaded films onto that & play them on the tv that way.
I'm also transfering my original dvds onto a drive ready as well (as they'll be perfect quality).

If u can afford it, I'd try to get a dvd player that can play avi files - it really does save a lot of hassle (which u won't realise until u start converting).
Some films can take a couple of hours to convert & burn - times that by the amount you've downloaded and u could be spending days converting stuff! (as I found out).

Looks like this cheapy sony dvd player can do it:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DVPSR90...1656637&sr=8-2

If u really do want to convert though & nero vision doesn't work, then you'll have to browse google searching avi2dvd converters & see which one can convert & burn.

    Re: Burning DVDs

F**k knows, but I've had to do a system restore, and a malwarebytes scan showed 2 objects in the registry were infected - proper squeaky bum time

I originally had the VISTA BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH until I slowed my heart rate down [sweatdrop] , started he system in safe mode, and fixed sh*t

Think I'll just carry on being a numpty - burned DVDs are never the same as the originals anyway

    Bugger!
Glad u got it sorted though - I forgot to say, anything u do ever download always run a couple of scans on it just incase (although probably a bit late for that advice now!).

If only u could get that nero to work as it's perfect for the job.
Is it nero burning or nero vision express that you've tried (as it's the later that it the one u need)?

My missus had vista premium on her laptop, so I'll try to find a copy of nero express that works on hers - then I can send u over the link for it.

Ok, it's installed ok & is running (I just clicked away from the popup boxes saying it maybe incompatible).
I loaded an avi onto it & it went all the way to the end ready to re-encode & burn, but as I'm off out, don't have time to test that bit.

    Download: http://www.sendspace.com/file/dxrift

Serial (use a fullstop for the username) : 1A23-0809-4030-2465-2397-4841

I'll try to do a quick guide later on how to use it if u don't figure it out.

I use TMPGEnc for all my converting and burning needs. Very fast as well. I can convert a 2 hour AVI in 22 minutes (although my PC being fast has a lot to do with it)

Best programme there is. I've used them for years.

    Did it install ok?

Presuming it did, load up Nero Vision Express (start menu, programs, nero, nero digital, nero vision express).
When loaded, select: Make DVD, DVD Video.
Add video files (browse to your avi & click open).
    Next.
In the bit which says 'Menus to Use:' - select 'Do not create a menu'.
(U can have a menu, but that needs a lot more explanation to use).
    Next.
    * Now u should get an idea of how it'll look playing *
    Just click Next.
Now this is the final page.
Click details to see details of what the file specs are etc & how it'll encode it (u can change some settings by clicking on the More tab below & changing stuff (such as quality etc)).
Volume Name - change this to what u want the disc to be called.
Burn to - u can select the dvd drive (make sure a blank dvd is in there) or u can burn as an image (useful if making lots of copies & u can just burn from the created image at a later date).
Then when you're ready, press 'BURN'.
You'll then have to wait ages for it to convert & then once done it'll burn the data to the dvd.

    Things to note:

Make sure u have a blank dvd in the drive.
Make sure u have at least 5gig of drivespace free.
Make sure u know it's going to take around 1 - 2 hrs depending on your pc / size of video.

    That's about it.

Quality program - used to use that years ago for converting old captured vhs footage. I remember it being fairly indepth though (fields / frames etc) so probably not as easy to use as nero vision express.
