F@#K! F@#K! F@#KETTY-F@#K!!! Audio Hardware Nightmare Come True.

With a huge amount of feedback from [DS], I've confirmed a horrible truth why I have been unable to get true 'stereo' rips from my vinyl over the past 2 and a half years. My 'Griffin Technology iMic USB Audio Interface' which I have been faithfully using only recieves a 1 channel feckin' input!!!

    I had been tinkering around with the sound settings in Control Panel, and noticed the option to recive 2 channel input, but kept getting an error message when trying to get Audacity to record/play anything. After checking out Audio converting forums I discovered this shocking truth;

This item will not provide 2 channel (stereo) input with Windows Vista. It provides satisfactory 2 channel output, but any attempt to select 2 channel input in Control Panel results in an error message while trying to capture audio using Audacity.
So the moral of this story is, check all your online resources before stumping up cash for audio interface hardware.

However, despite my annoyance, I'm gonna set out to buy meself some proper 'stereo' recording hardware and do meself some proper recordings (which means I'm gonna haveta go back and re-record all the rips I've made on here!!! Again!!!! ). So no more ripping vinyl till this is sorted!

Does that mean everything you've ripped is in mono?

I'm afraid so. Think I need to put up a disclaimer untill I get them sorted. Sorry guys. At least my CD rips and links from other people are kosher.

They'll still play fine mate - just means that certain sounds that were meant for a particular speaker will come out of both.

Yeah, they sound okay on my iPod and car stereo. You will still get a stereo sound, however both headphones/speakers will be playing equally the same in each ear. It's just you miss out all the differences in the sound outpu in the track, i.e. sounds which appear like they are going from one ear to the other.

Am just pissed off that it's taken me so long to realise that my hardware wasn't up to filtering 2 channels (stereo), and that I made so many 320 bitrate rips after setting up Audacity to record in stereo, not knowing that my iMic USB was the culprit.

I have spotted this for £25 which maybe my saviour, but am gonna get some backup advice before I splash the cash!

Microshite Vista, unbelievable that there isn' a fix for this, don't suppose you would want to switch back to XP?

The Behringer you mentioned is not a bad option, but it is frowned upon by snotty audiophiles. I did this rip viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1960&p=100537&hilit=love+toni ght#p11825 with one of those, tho it was using a Technics 1210 with a nice needle and through an expensive Nuwmark mixer, the results were very reasonable I think.

Good to hear you're still gonna plough on mate B-) . I'm know I'm not alone in saying that you are a credit to the forum.

I think I'll just fork out for the new hardware, but I think it'd be a good idea to go and check out the reviews first before I splash the cash. 'Nuff respect for all the props I've gotten and despite the setback, I ain't gonna let it stop me contributing to I.A.A.O. (well, least till I get the proper hardware!). And a special cheers to [DS] for pointing us along the way with setups and the Behringer review!

I dunno how Windows could have short-changed us on the sound channel options, but I'm less knowledgable about computer programs to risk changing back to XP. Scared my iTunes Playlist evaporate as they seem to do everytime a major Windows upload takes place!!!

Normal (hell, new & improved!) service will resume shortly!

Cheers for clearing that up chaps! Sorry to hear about your misfortune though Stuz.

Yeah, won't be Windows fault (for once) - I take it you were using a laptop? They nearly all seem to come with a mono input which is very silly in this day and age.

Had a quick look at that soundcard link - looks fine - if u click the image, you can see it says L & R on it, so it should be stereo..

So let me get this right - any speaker imaging/pan made in the tune will just be nulled and come out of both speakers instead?

I do like that little trick (shouldn't be used for beats though [-x ), but it ain't the end of the world stuz

I just think it's great that you've stumbled across this site and are prepared to up all your vinyl - gotta say I do like your collection. Don't beat yourself up over it mate

Basically, but depending on how the sound is, some 'mono-ing' can remove parts of the sound (due to phasing). Not gonna get too technical though.

No, I'm with you so far RG. That's understandable. Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary when I'm mixing stuz's rips

Re: F@#K! F@#K! F@#KETTY-F@#K!!! Audio Hardware Nightmare Come True.

Am more annoyed that I've not been getting a true sound from my recordings, and shared them on here too. But am just waiting for my 'Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 USB Audio Interface' to arrive which will rectify the problem.

I did manage to get a stereo rip yesterday after seaching for solutions on audio hardware forums (http://www.fixya.com/support/t2777252-i ... l_all_seen), but the quality of the recording was absolutely crap (hissing from electrical interferance) and I couldn't use my mixer controls for some reason either? So am hoping the Behringer's 2 channel stereo input will rectify the problem without having to cheat the Sound settings.

Hope to be back on the vinyl ripping bandwagon in the next coupla days! Cheers everyone for the backup!

Ah, glad you're online stuz - was in the garden earlier listening on my mp3 player to a mix I did last week where the "Drowning In Her" track is used. LOADS of speaker imaging going on in that tune (and very cleverly done too, fantastic production B-) ) and I know for a fact 100% that I downloaded that from you on this site.

Actually, that may piss you off even more

Heya Swipezster! Am afraid that it was Dramaqueen who upped the magnificent 'Drowning In Her'. I did a bit of a mini-big-up of the tune in her thread, but it were'nt me who provided the rip. I had been trying for ages to work out why the Nino 'World Champion' rip I did recently, didn't have all the mad sound phases between the channels. Found out now though. Grrrrrrr!!!!
