I now use Platinum Notes to convert mp3 to wav (better quality), but was just wondering why you'd like to convert them back to mp3?

    File size maybe?

    Re: wav to mp3

converting mp3 to wav is a pointless excercise imo as you cannot reverse the compression that was done during the initial conversion to mp3.

once the damage is done you can't undo it....just because it's now in wav doesnt make the quality any better...it's still the same quality as the original mp3 source...just in a bigger file format.

audio 101 that and i'm still surprised by how many people seem to think that converting back to full audio formats improves the quality

    Re: wav to mp3

Audacity is a free audio editor which will let you import a .wav and export it as .mp3

Make sure you alter the default settings so it exports something decent like 192 and over.

Its open source so you can also use the free to download and very good sounding LAME mp3 encoder with it for the best quality possible.
But like Haze says and as i put in a previous post. there is no going back from mp3, so any editing should be done first to preserve the audio quality.

    'AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!'

I wish I had found this thread a year and a half ago when I first started converting my vinyl with Audacity. Mind you on the plus side. I'm gonna get stuck into using the Switch Sound program to convert my mountain of WAV files (and clear up a loada space in the process! ).

    Excellent recommendation Waard!

    Cheers!

dbpoweramp is all you will ever need for converting, but you will have to find a cracked version unless you want to pay for it.

If you are a mac user look no further than this. Max converts mp3,wav,flac,ape etc & it's absolute quality.
Just download & convert simple as that.

Cheers for the link there Waard, but a I'm a Windows man here. I'm still using SoundSwitch to convert my files, and I rackon it's doing the job fine (or I'm too used to it to be brave enough to change!). And to beleive that I used to convert all my CD and vinyl rips into MP4 files using the ACC iTunes converter. Much prefer the MP3 files, even if it's just for the nice album artwork which gets embedded on the file!

I know this thread is about wav to MP3 converters, but rather than converting my wav's to MP3 I've been using a free proggie I found on the net called FeyConverter to convert wav's into FLAC files.

FLAC is lossless (uses the same type of compression as RAR files apparently), so you can convert FLAC files back into wav for editing or w/e if you require, so that is 1 big advantage over MP3's. FLAC's can also be played in VDJ, Traktor and Winamp (probably others too). I'm getting my wav files down to about 60% of the size they were now they are FLAC's, so if you want to keep your wav quality, but want to free up some more space on your hard drive, FLAC is the answer.

that can't be true m8 as wav is a higher bitrate than mp3 can ever be so your loosing quality converting it back from mp3 to wav and using extra space on your hd, yes platinum notes helps to increase the quality etc but you can't increase what was lost in the first conversion from wav to mp3 as those top end frequencies and low down base are gone for good rmbr where talking 0/1 here.
