Thread: 1000GB External HDD = 1 Pain In The Bollix!

So here the story bought this 1000GB HDD or 1TB and it said all ya do is plug it into the PC and it works no problem, no need to format it or anything just plug it in and away you go.

Right i get home open it, take it out the box, plug it in and connect it to the PC and then............NOTHING!
says installing new software then thats that. Go to my computer and its not showing up were it should be, Go to to device manger and its not there either.
so after fuckin around for ages lookin for it i finally found it by going to computer management and it was there BUT it said that the file system was RAW, so i tried to
format it and it says windows cannot complete the format, tried to change the drive letter and it would'nt let me. In the end i had to let a mate access my PC though MSN
and he could'nt do anything either. So looked on the net and was told to uninstall the BUS controllers and see if that fixes it and no it did'nt fix it. So now i'm at a lose what to do next
i bought it to back up my music and video what i had to do was i plugged the HDD into the laptop just to see if it was an issue with the HDD but it worked on the laptop and i checked the file system and it was NTFS not RAW like it said on my PC, so i had to transfer 47GB just over 6,000 tunes using the router and it took fuckin hours!!! X( then 20GB of movies also had to be shifted over too, but the worst part is that it took around 7hrs to move all the gear and it took about 15mins to copy to the HDD from the laptop. So each time i wanna back up or save stuff i have to do that crap all over again. So does anyone know how i might fix this issue, also the PC is not reading USB/Flash drives it comes up and once ya try use it or move stuff onto it it dis-connects ~x( ~x(

Do u have a link to the actual one you bought?

Usually they do work just fine - plug in the usb port - up it pops as a new device & then u just select it via My Computer.

If it's saying Raw - then it's unformated (as far as I'm aware).

Also, did u just plug it in via the usb cable or did it have an external power supply?? (Not many that don't).

And if it's also not detecting other stuff you're plugging into the usb ports, sounds like there's something a bit strange going on - do u safely remove stuff before unplugging them from the pc using the little icon in the taskbar?? Not doing this can cause problems.

I'm off out tomorrow morning & probably won't have pc access again until next week - so will check any replies when I get back.

Sorry mate can't help. I'm running 2 separate external hard drives & both were a simple plug in & use.

you have to goto

Computer Management > Disk Management

Right Click on the RAW drive then select Partition as [Dynamic]

it will then Partition and Format the drive as NTFS [Dynamic]

Reckon you can lock this or remove it as its sloved and the newbies seem to just postin in here to get there post count up...
