    Best Registry Cleaner

After moaning about how my external HD with all my tunes on it is knackered, I've actually found that it's the laptop.
There's severe registry issues with it as I have the dreaded (not responding) message in the actual Windows explorer

Looked on the internet but there's some really dodgy sites out there that I'm sure are getting paid by some companies to say that their product is the best.

I downloaded the Uniblue 6 months ago and it's turned out that it's not done much except make the mouse a bit faster as it downloaded the right driver for it.

So far, this seems the badboy to get: Advanced System Optimizer - Performance, Power and Protection for your computer

    Please, I'm desperate for suggestions

I've used this for a couple of years:

Free Windows 7 Registry Cleaner, Optimizer, Vista, XP Regcure Software, Tweaking

If i don't use it for a while i definitely notice a difference when i do.

Just googled to find the link & the top article is a tad misleading. I was expecting some horror story about it but the guy just rambles on about how he's not sure it was the right package for him & then stops suddenly - odd. Gets a review score of 8.1 further down on that page.

Nope, tried all of the above, thanks guys.

Think there maybe something missing from the OS but luckily can transfer all my music to the SD card on my phone - just won't copy to any other external devices?

I've just re-read this and it sounds to me like spyware or adware not a reg issue. What does the error say and how is it displayed? Can you get a screen shot if it and post it?

Mate the whole lappy is slow and the windows explorers have "(not responding)" in the corner and all other files are slow to open.

I did put on a dodgy copy of windows 7 ultimate and it's put a 32 AND 64 bit version on the HD, so I tried to delete the 64-bit version from Program Files but Trusted Installer stopped me so then I removed Trusted Installer and it's been downhill all the way from there really...

I've tried downgrading to XP but it won't install - apparently it's very difficult to downgrade a PC from whatever original version of windows it came with.

I've used this for a few years: TuneUp Utilities

They have just released version 2012, which I have just upgraded to. I've used it since 2008 and it keeps my registry, Hard Drives and other such things in tip top condition

Do yourself a favor and scan it for spyware, adware and virus'. Especially if your getting links to dodgy sites saying their tools will remove the problem and/or speed it up. It really does sound like spyware to me.

Failing that then it sounds like the CPU of the laptop isn't powerful enough to run the 64bit version of Windows 7.

    Check this just in case:

"To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor. To find out if your processor is 64-bit-capable in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:

    • Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type Performance Information and Tools, and then, in the list of results, click Performance Information and Tools.
    • Do one of the following:

      • In Windows 7, click View and print detailed performance and system information.
      • In Windows Vista, click View and print details.
    • In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type, and whether or not you can run a 64-bit version of Windows under 64-bit capable. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)"

I'm not sure that is possible Stu to have both versions on.

I have the 64bit version of 7 Ultimate on and what it does is create 2 folders, one is called X86 which is for programmes which only run in 32bit mode. To check what version you are using, goto control panel, click on system and security, click on system and it should say what version you are using.

EDIT: Just noticed Mortis has wrote a post above this one regarding the processor, he is right in what he says in that you need a duel core processor (minimum) to run a 64bit operating system. Most Laptops and desktops bought in the last couple of years should (in theory) have a dual core.

Mate I have 2 Program Files in my C: drive, one x86, the other x64 both filled with identical software/programs I've downloaded. I think they're clashing with each other.

I did however find a portable Tuneup Utilities program which has helped the laptop speed-wise but there's something bad underlying... you know when you can just feel it?

It's a 3 year old Acer and it'd be easy to say "buy another laptop" but I ain't got the moolah and besides, it's the daughter's laptop so it's the principle of it.

*EDIT - I've just seen Mortis's post too, am on the case...
