Thread: External Hard drive

I need to get one- roughly in the 100 to 200 quid range (not shelling out for Time Capsule)
Roughly the following Specs:

Mac compatible/ Cross platform enabled
320 to 500G storage
Own power supply- USB/ Firewire (no external power supply)
Wi-fi enabled would be cool
Are there any brands that are reliable -i.e least three years
Are there any brands to stay away from?

Western Digital is what I use.

I need something soon, not shelling out 200 quid for one tho, I'm only a part time window cleaner!

Defo whatever you do dont go anywhere near the seagate drives!

I was recommended a 'Lacie' drive from the dude in the apple store for my mac & my pal has one & has never had a problem with it.

The Western Digital are good too apparently.

I think the Rugged Hard Disk would be the one to go for mate,nice & sturdy!

I bought myself a Western Digital Essential 320GB portable, you can find them for a tidy £60 on amazon

works with my mac and is so small it can sit on it without blocking the keyboard or trackpad! I formatted it to run more smoothly with the mac instead of the stock FAT32 file format

What did you format it to ?
I've got a WD 500 gb but just used it straight out of the box with my Mac I think?

It should be compatible with Mac just email the ebay guy to ask first to make sure.

No point buying smaller drives as they really don't work out good value.
