    External Hard Drive problem!!

I bought a Buffalo Just Store 1TB external hard drive a month ago, copied about 470 megs of music & the same in films, so nearly filled the bugger

    I have 2 problems...

    1. It won't turn on... I've tried different USB & power cables to 3 different computers & still no joy.

    2. I've contacted Buffalo technical support & the seller i bought it off from Ebay, both of which want to send forms back & forth & hopefully replace it for me.

Can the data i have on it be retrieved?
    Can i do it myself?
As if it can when i send it back & they see what's on it i could get in alot of shit for the films that i have on it...

    Any help appreciated

I had this problem with one of my external hard drives and the problem turned out to be a dodgy lead - power supply lead. Maybe this could be the problem. In which case you don't need any one to fiddle around with your external hard drive.

By any chance did you leave this external hard drive on all the time?

The power lead for my laptop (which is powering my laptop now) fits in the hard drive but it still won't start & i've used the USB cable from my 1.5TB external hard drive which i've got plugged in & working now on my laptop... Neither wires (that both work fine) work with my 1TB hard drive

I only turn it on when i plug it into my laptop to add files & then remove it with the 'safely remove' option...

I've got all the data that was on it on my 1.5TB & also all my music backed up on over 150 data DVD's... So i haven't lost anything

Just worried that when i send it back that they can recover the data & get me in all kinds of shit for what i have on there...

As long as you have got anything really dodgy on there (if you know what I mean, I don't want to say it and i'm not saying you will...erm, well you know what I mean) they won't bother fella. So I wouldn't worry.

Have you checked the power supply going to your laptop?

    No porn on there
That's on my 'special' hard drive

I've got over 500 2010 items on it, some of which have not been released yet... That's what worries me

If it's not the power supply from the laptop the only thing i can think of is the enclosure went bad so you have 2 options.

You either remove the enclosure and then you can connect it yourself as an internal hard drive or you can replace the enclosure.

    Hope this helps

I forgot to add it could be that the enclosure's USB interface that has died.

Simple things that can be fixed.

If you do any work just bear in mind that the warranty runs out and also if you do send of your External hard drive under the warranty you can ask them to retrieve the files for you at a cost.

Fair play msprim, that thought never even entered my head

Just tried & the holes for the pins are different sizes, my laptop hole is slightly larger (oooer missus) & might not have been touching the pin on the hard drive...

Good thinking babes, think i'll buy a new power lead & see what happens
