how do you turn a hard drive on and off?

Proper stupid question and I couldn't find on the web. I have a WD drive it has 3 buttons on the front, top is a clock, middle is what looks like two pieces of paper with a curved arrow over them and at the bottom is the power switch. When turning the drive off by holding the power switch in, when it powers off the computer says it was unable to save files, (the files are still there). My question is , am I doing it wrong ? should I be using the other 2 buttons? and what are they for?

I'm not particularly slow but another drive I had had no buttons at all, cheers in advance

    I'm guessing it's an Western Digital WDXUB3200JBNN - Dual-option External Hard Drive 320 GB?

The top button (Clock) is for 'Automatic Backup'

The middle button (2 Folders) is for 'Manual Backup'

The Bottom button is the power button.

Although from the diagram it appears you've put the drive upside down...

Sounds abit complicated to me for an external drive... A manual can be found here

thanks for that, seems to be a very similar one to the one I've got, almost identical, couldn't see the number on it,

think I was doing it right all along, just have to shut the computer down before the drive, was powering the drive down before the computer.

It sounds abit over complicated with automatic & manual backup... Why would you back up what's on it & to where?

I always right click on the icon by the clock & remove my external safely that way... But i have my settings set so anything i copy to the external isn't written to a cache (which takes longer) so that it transfers quicker but you have to safely remove the USB instead of just pulling it out.

Aaaaaaaaanywho's, hope you get it sorted
