To McAfee or not to McAfee?

Got a great offer with Sky broadband at the moment with free Mcafee.

Problem is, I don't whether it's any good or not. We have it at work and certain trojans have got onto our network, so it can't be all that.

I also had to disable Norton on my laptop - I hate it as it monolpolises your computer X(

So now I am (and have been for 6 months) been running Windows basic security program on Vista - should I really be worried?

Re: To McAfee or not to McAfee?

Norton's defo a bag a bag of shite! That's the one bit of anti-virus software that most people seem to agree on in my experience! It slows your computer down no end, which in it's self is one of the things a virus can do! As far as McAfee goes everyone seems to have differing opinions as with most anti-virus software. I used to use Mcafee a couple of years ago, but one of my mates who's VERY good with computers told me it's rubbish & recomended Kaspersky so I switched over to that. Then another friend who's VERY good with computers said that Kaspersky's rubbish & reccomended AVG :-\ Anyway I've tried several over the years & out of what I've used I've found Kaspersky & AVG to be the best. The only problem I've found with both is that they detect keygens as a virus! Which is a pain in the arse, 'cus as soon as the keygen is detected as a virus it's rendered useless. In order to use the keygen's I have to uninstall AVG, use the keygen & then reinstall AVG which is a bit of a pain ~x(

Cheers Rog. As for keygens, I refuse to use them anymore - they've been nothing but fooking trouble (I've had to do system restores and the like), so IMO AVG is doing the right thing by noting them as viruses

Yeah as rogue said norton is shite!! also you mite find when u remover norton yer internet might not work thats because there is keys left over in the registry you need to use a speical uninstall tool to remover norton. I use Mcafee on me laptop its not bad BUT slows the whole thing down when it updates and installs AVG is good to i used to use that.

Norton used to be good about 10 years ago - not much cop these days though.
Mcaffe couldn't catch a virus if u sneezed on it!

Avg is fairly good, but no one prog finds everything - plus as mentioned, a lot of progs register keygens as viruses (although some are, so u have to be careful).
And all virus killers slow down the pc a bit as it's checking everything that's going on. The faster the pc u have the better.
Oh, make sure u don't run more than 1 virus killer at once as they'll confict & slow stuff down even more. Spyware progs are a different kettle of fish.

regedit comes built in with windows, that should do the trick when it comes to removing unwanted registry entries

I have used all the popular virus software and never been happy with any of them, bit defender was alright i hear kaspersky is good to i actually i have to try that, i mite just buy it proper. I used cheap free spyware killers and they have found virus and trojans my main virus scanners missed!!

    I have:

    Hitman Pro & Spyware Terminator

I don't think even the Prof would mess around with his registry... would he?

Well I have done for certain easy stuff, but wouldn't delve too deeply in as most is way out of my depth.

Better off grabbing ccleaner (which is free) - this can clean up the registry & also has a program removal bit in it as well.

Same here! In fact I think the only time I've used regedit is when removing Norton!
