    More Weirdness

I've scanned my laptop with malwarebytes, but there's no viruses or anything.

The problem is that something is eating away very slightly at my memory and I'm losing mp3s here and there. Like last week, I had 6 Gb memory left, but this morning I've got 5.4 Gb left.

I've defo not downloaded any software, mp3s or anything coming to think about it this last week, and even if I had (which I haven't), there's no way I've used up half a Gb.

I'm not stupid when it comes to this sort of thing; I do understand that the memory usage will fluctuate with temporary files and things, but I've emptied all of those, yet my memory is still going down. I've even created my own little program where I can clear my RAM instantly, so why I'm losing memory is beyond me - I also empty my recycle bin every other day

As for my mp3s going missing, I'm not going mad - I list my mp3s every month, and there's defo some gone since August :-\

Has anyone heard of this problem?

I had a similar problem a few years back, as in files mysteriously dissapearing from my HD I was soooo gutted as these files included a few of my own tracks that I'd been working on! Unfortunatley I never got to the bottom of it. Sorry I can't be more helpfull Will be interesting to see if you do find out the cause mate, I'll be keeping my eye on this thread...

No sorry haven't got a clue what it could be :-\

Can you not do a system restore?

And make a external back-up of your files before this phenomena eats away all your mp3's.

Back up my files every week (learnt the very hard way of not backing up last April) and I did a system restore 2 weeks ago after I downloaded a Key crack and it was in truth a virus.

Mulling over whether to do a Factory reset... tips on this? Everything important to me is backed up

    Very strange indeed!

Do u have any norton app installed by any chance??
Not sure about the missing mp3s, but my hard-drive space kept going down even though I was emptying the bin / clearing temp files & I found it to be something a norton utility had done to the recycle bin - it was basically keeping a backup of my deleted stuff, so just kept getting bigger.

Only other thing I can think of (if it isn't some sort of virus) is damaged drive sectors - try running the chkdsk thing in dos mode to see if it detects any physical problems with the drive itself.

    Re: More Weirdness

Just found something very nasty called SeekService which is cloaked malware - relatively new trojan, which I've thankfully got rid of Don't think it's eating my memory though

I don't have Norton as I knew years ago that it monopolises your PC.

You keep telling me to scan everything with malwarebytes don't you BB? I still don't listen

I might try a factory reset; I have all my mp3s, vids, piccies & fave progs/software backed up, but apparently I need to back up drivers as well, but I don't have a clue how to go about this... any ideas?

It is a good prog that can detect things other stuff can't. Although there's also a prog called Spyware Doctor (which isn't free - or can be got with a dodgy download).
This is also good at finding things other progs can't.

Only do this if u really have to .
It's a pain in the ars* & u really do need to have all your drivers to hand. It is a pc or laptop??
If it's a laptop or a pc bought from a shop, u should have got at least a recovery disc - and presuming u haven't put new hardware inside the thing, it 'should' put all the drivers back on as well - although that's at your own risk - without seeing the discs etc, I wouldn't personally risk it.
If it's a pc u built, you should have driver cds for each part of it - motherboard, graphics, sound, network, modem etc.

Then there's all your programs (music progs, winamp, office, paintshop etc).
And all the other bits and bobs that go with it (directx, divx, xvid, acrobat, etc).

As u can see.... I've done this a few times (but only with custom made pcs).

I'd first try to see if the disc itself is damaged - run that chkdsk thing - start button, run, cmd (this takes u to dos mode).
    c:
    cd\
    chkdsk

might take a little while for a proper scan, but hopefully it'll show u if there's any buggered sectors or not.

    Re: More Weirdness

Thanks Billybob - i just checked my own disk and it says this

    'WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read only mode.'

    It checks the disk -
It does stage one which is fine.
Then stage 2 and it deletes some index entries and is then complete.
    then this comes up

'Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.'

    It doesn't do stage 3?

How do i get it to do all 3 stages Billybob and how do i get it out of read-only mode?

    Re: More Weirdness

To be honest, I've never seen that error before, but after a quick google search, this was one of the things that came up:

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/pag ... _35_0.html

    basically chkdsk /f

This seems to force a repair on damaged sectors - although if I were u, make sure anything on that drive is backed up before any fixing, just incase it does something weird to it.

Just tried this and it won't do it - it says it can't check as it is being used by another process :-\ - it says it will do it on the next system restart. So i will let you know how i get on Billybob - thanks again

I had exactly the same yesterday msprim - just restart the computer, and it'll automatically check on start up... all 3 stages

Your PC creates it's own restore points at regular intervals & that uses alot of your memory, every now & then i disable restore points & re-enable them (after i've ran all of my cleaning & security software) & it clears all previous restore points... Giving me around 20 gigs of memory back.

As for your data going missing, not too sure about that one.

I use abit of software called Windows Washer that cleans a shit load of unnecessary crap off your hard drive & gives you more space on the hard drive... If that's any help to you?
