    Virtual Dj 6

well hello there, fancy seeing you lot here

im been browsing a few websites and stumbled across virtual dj 6,now iv never ever entertained the use of laptop for mixing music, but i want to learn well thats what iv suddenly decided tonight, plus as im on my laptop all the time i reckon i will mix more and for a whole lot cheaper, maybe get a few oldskool downloads and mix tracks i would of never dreamed of

seems like a great idea !!

now iv never used any kinda dj program so would be a bit nervous of messing around the icons and shit

are they easy to use, well what i mean is would a beginer find it fairly user friendly

and most off all does it give you great satisfaction mixing this way like i get from mixing vinyl ?

so tell me fellas is it a great idea

It will nowhere near give you the satisfaction of being on the decks mate. I used VDJ before I got my decks and loved it, apart from the latency problems I was having. It's very easy to use, I could do it so it's gotta be easy!

virtual dj...now now mr riot, you know there's trouble brewing when you start considering forsaking your turntables for pixels!

get yourself serato instead...then mix with your turntables and your laptop

    Re: Virtual Dj 6

Mr. Haze has a point RIOT about Serato. Few hundred quid, yeah, but probably the best you'll ever spend...

I however champion VDJ because I'm a cheap bastard, and wanted to start DJing again "on the cheap" with all those lovely mp3s sitting on my hard drive.

Coupla things RIOT with VDJ - it's not a toy, but I don't think you could get away doing your radio show with it, say - ATEOTD it's not the most stablest and professional package out there. If you want a bit of a mess about at home or recording a few sets, go for it. I wasn't happy with DJing on just my laptop and went that extra step further and got this Midi device which is good fun:

    Numark Total Control

I think with my hardware & software, it takes me to the half-serious level of DJing... but I don't find it quite serious enough.

It is, however, very user friendly and you can do some very tight and interesting mixes on it with a few sound effects and samples thrown in (you can download a shed-load off the internet, but the following link has a few extras thrown in).

Anyway, VDJ 6.0 is good, but IMO has too many bells and whistles on it, even if it does look that bit more professional on your monitor. I personally foound it unstable (think the bells & whistles were weighing it down), but being as you've recently had a new lappy it should cope with it fine.

I do think however that you should go with the most tried and tested version posted by msprim months ago, version 5.2:

    DOWNLOAD VDJ 5.2

I'd get used to that version first mate, and if you like it and get familiar with it, download VDJ 6:

    DOWNLOAD VDJ 6

After 2 years with VDJ and thena year with the hardware mp3 mixer, I've come to the conclusion that it's NOT a DJ solution if you like your vinyl - Serato is - but if you just want a fiddle about on your laptop, VDJ is perfect; msprim has done a few decent mixes with it which you'll be able to find in the "Showcase Your Talent Section".

For problem solving, this thread is excellent:

    Slight Glitch Thread

If you need anymore help or advice, I'll give you all the help you need mate

Should push come to shove, give us a bell mate and I can walk you through it - sorting out the latency issue can be a nightmare ~x(

    Hope this helps

1st of all a really big thank for the links and your invaluble advice

i never ever want to replace my turntables with laptop just kinda mess around and see if i can be just as constructive.and maybe just maybe grab a few free mp3's and piss around a little

vdj 6 was the one that grabbed me,as it did look pretty proffessional,i like the idea of havin turntables on my monitor, rather than waveforms, does vdj5.2 offer this as well ??

i know im no where near good enough on this software (yet)to construct a radio show, but is vdj not the one even if i do go digital almost full time and decide to do my sets with said program

its funny you say vdj is a bit unstable fella, because i downloaded a few copies and found they crashed,i just presumed they were dodgy files lol

anyway guys,i really appreciate your views and thanxs a million for the links

    speak soon geezers

Are there any alternatives to VDJ? Tried it a few times and while its easy to use, the glitches get too annoying.

Not used VDJ, but I tried a load of different programs couple of years ago. By far the best was Traktor

    Re: Virtual Dj 6

I actually got a proper licensed VDJ 6.x and never experienced any "crashes" (my music files are all CBR too). There can be the one or other problem with video files while mixing video but I never cared about videomixing...

I use this for pissing about http://www.pcdj.co.uk/. Dead easy to use, but a bit cpu heavy sometimes.

i also use VDJ with Numark Total Control

I find them both excellent. I intended to use my PC, but was chuffed to find it works fine on my 5 year old laptop (and it was only $500 back then, so not too powerful)

I dont get any latency issues at all for what its worth. It literally seems instant.

Would love Serato, but have no room for my decks

    Re: Virtual Dj 6

i also use vdj, since having sold my decks etc a few years back, and found it very very easy to use..infact it almost does it all for you,as it has a sync function which matches the bpms automatically..therefore taking out the whole beat matching aspect of real dj'ing..and also freeing up valuable seconds to enter the mix quicker etc.

I will have to agree about v6 tho...i dont like it one little bit..the software is not as fluid as v5.2..very glitchy..yes it may look prettier...but its all down to the sound at the end of the day.

I use version 5.2 and haven't found any problems with it, great for a laugh. I don't use all the features though.

This is a really interesting thread for me as I had to give up my DJ set up when my daughter was born (3.5 years ago) and I've been itching to find a cheap set up just to mess about a bit at home.

VDJ + the Numark Controller you've mentioned looks like it will do all I need it to but can someone briefly explain to me how the headphones and monitoring work on this set up? Presumably the headphones plug into the controller and you can then assign one or both channels to them? Having looked at the kit on other websites it's not obvious how this would work. I don't see any switches to flick between channels in the phones or a monitor crossfader like you'd get on a normal mixer.

Hope that makes sense and any help would be useful.

Yeah Numark and other eBay sellers are sneaky with the fact that Total Control needs a soundcard unless you want to hear anything through your shitty PC/laptop speakers, so it'd be a very good idea to get one.

As for determing the correct ports for headphone/speaker selection, I found it a complete nightmare in the settings and had to ring up Numark, who haven't got the best customer service - the bloke lost his rag with me over the blower because I couldn't keep up with him

Anyway I got there in the end so I'll retierate that if anybody needs any help by all means post on here or PM me

As for headphone monitoring, it's easy - either press the PFL button on whichever side you want to monitor, or hit the tab key on your keyboard - even the physical & digital lights illuminate to tell you what side you are monitoring through the phones... or even better - the default setting is to automatically monitor the deck which was loaded last - how good is that?

I took the big step and broadcast live with it last monday night (no need for seperate software either to stream it ) but found that the 'scratch' button crashed the system while it was streaming (I think it's because this changes the whole profile of the mixer and with the stream running too, it got confused and my laptop is shite anyway)

Thanks mate that's really useful. Just one last thing - can you monitor both channels through the headphones at the same time? This is pretty much crucial as I don't think I'll be able to have the volume loud enough to mix the conventional way ie one channel speakers, the other channel headphones.

Think I've just worked this out. Presumbly you can press PFL on both channels to monitor both at the same time?

No problem - I picked up the Numark TC with a soundcard on eBay for less than £150 mate
