    Rapidshare Have Screwed Us Over

For those of you with premium accounts, did you get this email:

we hereby inform you of a modification regarding the file inactivity regulations for Collector's accounts. The guaranteed storage time of a file after the last download (or after the upload, if a file has never been downloaded) will be lowered to 60 days on January 1st, 2010.

Please note that Premium accounts whose files use more than 50 GB of storage are subject to the same storage rules as Collector's accounts.

If you do not agree to the Terms of Use, you are entitled to cancel the contractual relationship within a time limit of four weeks as of receipt of this notification. Should you not make use of your right of cancellation, the alterations are presumed to be accepted and become an effective integral part of the contract.

This is pathetic. You may remember a previous email which said the same thing regarding having over 25gb of storage and how they would delete files which hadn't been downloaded in 90 days.

They are still advertising unlimited storage for premium users on their site and also, they are still advertising the site as a file share and file storage site. This goes against what they are saying.

They are also screwing over free users by saying you can't download this file unless you are a premium member.

They have already deleted over 25gb of my files.

I think it's time I upload everything to Megaupload and mediafire from now on.

Megaupload never delete your files and it's unlimited storage for premium members, Mediafire is the same.

I'm hearing good things about hotfile http://hotfile.com/

The likes of sendspace should be avoided at all costs. Waste of time.

I've always hated rapidshare 'cus of the waiting times & only being able to download files when it feels like it! ~x( & I don't use it enough to justify paying the £5 a month membership. I've always used mediafire, it's free, there's no waiting times or restrictions on downloads, & none of my files have ever been deleted

On the downside for some strange reason it wont let me upload files anymore! Everytime I attempt an upload it says on the progress bar that the file is uploading at 100mps or something stupid like that & then gets stuck & goes no-where :-\

A mate of mine has the same problem, i noticed as a free user on mediafire since the new layout my upload speed has dropped a lot! i used to upload it @ 1.4MB
1.5 on a good day but now im lucky if i get 500kbs

I had the same situation with Rapidshare, was a fully paid up member but couldn't upload anything? Sacked it off & used Mediafire instead & when my subscription to Rapidshare ended I didn't renew.....

Only drawback is without a premium account, downloading from them is rubbish!!

guernseygareth, I think the whole point of the thread is that RS is becoming less desirable. I can't speak for everyone else, but I've been around the scene for a long time and used several different means to share. Anyway, I've been a member of RS since before they became .com but if they continue to impose tougher restrictions and offer less for more money, you (and everyone else) will see that content will become harder and harder to find.

This topic just came up at another site where I reside and the long and short is I still use RS (and MU) but I will always look to the next big thing. Just my 2 cents though. I've been wrong before. LOL

The Rapidshare deletion of files after 60 Days is nothing short of disgusting. Zshare, aside from all the adverts, is a pretty decent site which also has a 60 day rule - but it's free. IMO it's like you're paying for nothing with RS.

I think selwyn's point is good - where are we going with the uploads? Again, with Megaupload, they're a nightmare to download from if you're not a paid up member... and I can see them going down the same route as RS eventually.

Hotfile is defo the 'new' RS from what I'm seeing in new uploads from the States

Got a premium with Hotfile now. Seems very fast but if you aren't a premium member, you might as well forget it.

Megaupload is ace and mediafire is also good, especially for free members.

RS, have gone to the dogs with their new rules. People power will win the war because without premium members paying, they will have nothing going for them, and by all accounts, people are going elsewhere if what to be read in internet forums is to be believed.

I thought of something last night - does this mean that all RS links on this site and especially Rapid.org will be dead if no bugger downloads them after 60 days, or is this a ruling for new uploads?

I got the same email. My understanding of it is that the new storage time rules apply to collectors accounts (=free accounts) and only to premium accounts (=paid accounts) when you use more than 50GB.

Needless to say this is bollox - this rules would make RS useless if you were to use it as a backup for your files. But no need to panic for us. 50GB is a lot. It's roughly 6000 tunes. And when you use more you can bypass the storage rules by opening a 2nd account - though it would mean paying twice.

For me RS is still the best option. I used Mediafire before but it won't let me upload anymore which makes it completely useless and i won't even start about Megaupload

Does read like that actually doesn't it.
I've got 10gig of stuff stored and some of my files haven't been downloaded since early 2008, so looks like their safe.

The original email they sent out stated 25gb, not 50. I had around 52 gig worth of stuff and they deleted a massive amount of my files and got it down to 25. This newer email has changed it to 50, which to me is a little too late as those extra 25 they decided to delete, I will have to upload again. But I won't be uploading there. I will just use RS as a place to download now, not upload.

You'd think Rapidshare would have made their minds ups about the limits - changing from 25 GB to 50 GB is a big difference - i am sure there is a lot of people in the same situation as you China where some of their files have been deleted - i think this is wrong although you could argue that when you purchased your Rapidshare account it was unlimited and they have breached their contract with you. They should have used these new rules on new accounts and not already existing accounts and when you go to renew then the new rules should apply.

    That's what i think anyway.
