Its All About Oldskool Weekly Email (20th February 2011)

Welcome to this week’s Its All About Me email

Owning your own website has its good and bad points. Most if not all owners will tell you this and I’m no exception. The good far outweigh the bad but sometimes the little things just get to you and make you think what the point in it all is?

Some of the bad include the constant scrutiny of what you do and every decision you make. At the same time though this can also be a good thing because it constantly keeps you on your toes and you analyse every choice you make before going ahead with that decision. The watching of what I do and where the site goes I find quite remarkable. We are just a small piece in cyberspace but the things we do and the things I say get remarked on quite a lot. From the downright funny to a totally clouded and one sided view and not forgetting some quite slanderous statements and lies. The thing that makes me laugh though is how some people will take what is said as gospel, if it is said it must be true. We see it all the time in life but instead of being objective and finding out the truth yourself, you stick your sheep head on and follow the rest of the heard.

I try to live by the rule that it’s better to be talked about, be it good or bad, than be ignored. Being in people’s thoughts shows you have a face and you are not just another person in a large crowd who is never noticed or thought about.

The good include having total control of the site. You are in the driving seat when it comes to updates and mods. You have to be a quick learner and not rely on others to help you out or answer your questions. I find this the most exciting thing because you are learning something new. From the very basics like deleting zero posters, to the more advance aspects of keeping themes updated, altering code and how to pin point files and folders on an FTP and which permissions to give to those files and folders to make your site work.

I started on phpBB software and learnt it back to front and then using Vbulletin from scratch and I pretty much have it covered now, but I’m still learning and it will be some time before I’m 100% confident in what I’m doing, which is why I have a test site as it enables me to learn on my own without risking the main IAAO & IAAT sites.

So the good far outweighs the bad and having great help on the site from Mods and Admin make things a lot easier.

A new version of the site software was released earlier last week and on Wednesday I shut the site for an hour to do the upgrade. One big change is the brand new mobile theme which has been added. This enables users to browse the site on their mobile phones much easier and a lot more pleasant as it’s a style dedicated for that purpose. If you haven’t tried it already and you have your mobile device handy then just point your browser to www.its-all-about-oldskool.com/forum to see it in action.

My latest show on Renegaderadio happened last week. It was a great show and thanks to all those who locked on and gave it a listen. If you did miss it, you can download the whole show here: China Rising - Its All About Trance (15-02-2011) (On Renegade Radio) don’t forget to leave your comments, good or bad. I will be back on RR on the 15th March, so put it in your Filofax and get locked in.

Congratulations to Wigs’s Nan who reached the ripe old age of 100 last week. A card was sent from the queen, although she didn’t stick a tenner in it. You can give your regards here: Big shout out to my Nan...

How do you feel about Soccer am? If you watch it, do you still enjoy it? Ghost Of War would like to know. Join the debate here: http://www.its-all-about-oldskool.co...ccer-am-18117/

Pioneer has just announced their latest mixer. The DJM 900 Nexus will be hitting stores soon. Take a look at it here: Mixing & Production Talk and let us know what you think.

It is worth selling your Vinyl collection? Nik Gnashers is toying with the idea. Give him your thoughts here: Is it worth selling Vinyl Collection now ?

    Have a great week,

    China.

Part and parcel of being a site owner Mal

In all seriousness, not really, just little comments here and there, untrue statements and observations which have accumulated over time. Nothing new

I only played it coz we were a bit pished on Friday and heard a god awful version of it in the bar we were in. She was dancing along so i said i'd play a half decent version Saturday. Not my best judgement call granted but i proved my point to her - therefore your mockery was irrelevant.

I can relate to what you are saying about getting hassle China.

With my blogs i got hassle a few times - when people sent me links and they were put on my blog, they eventually became dead links some of the comments i received were just so laughable

Plus i haven't updated my blogs that much really as i just don't have the time - but i do it when i can - i get messages all the time when are you updating your blogs and i'm like when i'm ready

It's like people's lives depend on me updating my blogs - wtf!!

I even got some comments about one of the old music players i had - people commented i don't like your player on your blog - well turn the fooking thing off then

I changed the player to RR so now people have the choice if they want to listen or not and it's in a more obvious place so they have the option to stop it.

So you're not alone China - it's like water off a ducks back to me now and i just laugh when people complain about silly things
