Welcome to this week’s IAAO email

The search for perfection is an on-going thing, it’s also impossible to achieve. You could be looking for the perfect track or the perfect mix. For DJ’s and music lovers, the search for perfection is definitely a never ending one. No matter what track you think you want, there is always another one you hear that you want even more. The same goes for the perfect mix or the perfect sound, can it ever be achieved?

A few years ago I wanted to try my hand at harmonic mixing. What this means (for those that aren’t sure) is mixing songs by Key. All music is recorded in a certain key and certain keys go perfectly with other keys, pretty simple really. You have to start learning about Key and pitch and while it certainly isn’t a steep learning curve, it’s still a mind boggling thing at first sight. I used a programme called Mixed in Key. This programme would analyse your music and get the key for you and the BPM. With this information you would then set about mixing tracks to create the perfect mix. The results of Harmonic mixing are pretty fantastic. Your mix just seems to flow and every song you mix into the next would fit together perfectly. Quite a few DJ’s have been harmonic mixing for years and years. The likes of Paul Oakenfold would do this on all his sets.

I eventually stopped it or didn’t do it as much as I found I was spending far too long looking for Keys instead of actually looking for a great song to stick in a set. That search for perfection in mixing was never achieved and could never be achieved because there was always a downside to doing it.

Last week I asked about a programme called Platinum notes, which is from the makers of the mixed in key software. This particular software would analyse your music and make it sound better. Results and opinions on this are varied and not consistent. Some people will swear by it and some people won’t. There’s a good side and bad side to it (yet again, perfection can never be reached)

So you see, no matter what perfect things we search for or want to achieve, it can never be reached or gained

If you want to read more about this and give your own opinion on this programme or mixed in key, then check out this thread: Has Anyone Used Platinum Notes?

IAAO member and Renegade radio DJ Curly had a special guest on his show this week, IAAO member and regular blogger Leonized was at Curly towers to give Curly a helping hand. Unfortunately it wasn’t the helping hand Curly wanted, so instead Leonized was on the MIC. To download the show, check out this thread: My Show from last night...
