    FLAC?

What are people's opinions of the FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec)?

Was a member of a forum that only allowed the uploading of files in FLAC format and it was ace as, as the name implies, everything you downloaded was full on pukka WAV after it had been decoded. The filesizes are comparable to MP3.

    Thoughts?

Good for archiving at high quality - not much good for anything else though (as in u can't play them on mp3 players or in the car etc).

There are some devices which can play them, but I'm guessing they won't play mp3s:

Aye, I don't think they work on itunes. I may be wrong but you could possibly convert them to mp3 using something like SF8 though so that you can then have them on your ipod.

Converting defeats the object of flac (which is lossless compression).
If u just wanna play tunes on a portable device, stick with mp3s
For archiving or listening on a nice stereo - either wav, cd or flac

Oh I totally agree billybob, it was just a suggestion of what you could do to get it onto your mp3/wma player.

    Re: FLAC?

FLAC is ideal if you burn your downloads to cd as it's perfect audio quality...if you use an ipod or are 100% digital with your listening then MP3 is what you want....so basically what billybob said

    Re: FLAC?

I don't think it's really worth having a section for FLAC haze, but I don't see any problem in users sticking up FLAK files in the appropriate sections. Best to let members know in the file name or topic title as it could cause confusion if someone downloads it and they can't play it through their usual means.
