Thread: NEW: Hide BBcode

There is much talk and anger at those that come on this forum, get to 10 posts and then don't bother to contribute.

To combat this we introduced the Non-Contributor group where by people would be added to if they had not made a post or really contributed in any way to this forum.

This is all well and good and could just get a bunch of spam posts to get back into the contibutor group.

Now most members are more angry at the fact that people download without a thanks. This will now change with the addition of a mod I have just installed.

There is a little gold/yellow key on the main posting box (not the quick reply box)

when you click on this button it will do display the HIDE tags and you put what you want in-between that BBcode. When you put something in-between that BBcode, it will now be hidden to members and the only way they will be able to see what is inside is if they reply to that post.

I have kept myself from putting this mod on the board because it can generate a spate of spamming with members replying with thanks, ta, nice one, cheers etc etc etc. But this is mainly for those who want something back from posting their collections up for people to enjoy. It might not be everything, but at least it is something.

Can I ask all members who post links in the download sections to put your links in the HIDE tags. This way it will hide your links until someone replies. We need you to do this to make it work, it will not do it on it's own

As for the links already on the forum without the HIDE tags? well you have two choices.

1) you can leave them as they are
2) you can go back and edit your posts with the HIDE tags

I hope this will in some way give you something back for all your hard work.

Yep, that's your main problem and something I don't like to see as most will know.

There are certain steps you can take to combat leechers and those not interested in showing a little thanks. But little steps help. There are no 100% fool proof ways of doing it though i'm afraid other than private FTP's etc.

But thinking why bother? I love it too much to ever think that. There are up's and downs but you learn to over come them and get on with it

True, but it's meant really for download links and nothing else. You know what you are replying to when you reply.

I'm glad I know how to use it now....

It's a bit disappointing that these spammers and time wasters bother at all. It's a shame you can't have an upload/download ratio. For eg If you upload 10 tunes, the siter lets you download 10 etc.

whatevers clever but i don't think it's a big deal if people don't say thanks. its rude, but whatever. not losing sleep over it. i do think it makes sense to just ban people that don't contribute anything, cause isn't that the point of everything being hidden?

I've just tried it and all text is hidden to me.

Great idea to deter the blaggers and am working my way though my links. However I just thought about a possible prob here? If you are adding code to links in a discography, does that mean you need to reply to each link you want to download? I tend to avoid uploading label folders 'coz it avoids folks having to download a whole label if it's just one EP you need. If that's the case then I'll just haveta keep the codes for single releases.

Another good point about this is older posts will get recycled by new members having to reply to get access to the links. Quite a few of my older uploads have had more downloads when someone has replied recently 'cos others may have missed the original post.

And at the end of the day - it's up to the poster if they wish to use it or not - it's not something you are forced into doing, so those that don't like it, don't use it

Also useful for the film / tv section I think for mentioning a good show, but hiding spoilers inside the code bits.

There's always a split when it comes to things like this. While some folks are happy without any replies, others get annoyed when they spend all that time ripping and upping and never get any kind of thanks for it.

Plus while I will encourage members to use this mod from now on, there is still a choice if you choose to use it or not.

No one will get banned for not contributing to this forum. The only time members are banned is if they breach the rules which are set out on this forum
