Poll And Discussion: Removing The 10 Post Rule

As you are all aware, we have a 10 post rule on the site which means all new users must make 10 posts before the whole site is open up to them.

This was originally created to stem the flow of leechers to the site and encourage user participation on the forum.

    This has positives and negatives.

The positives is that it stops someone just coming along, joining and downloading without having to say a word to anybody, not even a thank you when they have taken something.

The negatives being that some users who want to share things are unable to because they are forced to join in with chat which they aren't really interested in (weak I know but it happens)

We introduced on the old forum a way for users to hide their links until someone replied to a thread. Members were free to choose if they wanted to do this or not.

On this new forum, we also have the ability to do this by using the hide links button, which when used correctly by following these instructions to the wire: Its All About Oldskool - Oldskool Rave Music Forum - How To Hide Your Links also have the same effect. It must be stressed here that you must follow those instructions to the wire and not do anything else for this to be effective in hiding your links.

Again, users are free to use the hide link function if they want a little kick back from users by hiding links until reply.

Members getting to 10 posts just to get to those links were doing exactly that. Granted not everyone did this, but the majority did, which means the 10 post rule doesn't work in all cases while working on other cases.

The moving users to the non contributor status is not a factor here and quite frankly I thought it was pointless.

I think members who come here will either use it as a leeching site or become part of the community we have built here regardless of the 10 post rule which means I am opening a poll and discussion on whether we should get rid of it all together.

If users want some kind of kick back from posting links, they can simply use the hide function we have here, which we never originally had when the site opened, which is why the 10 post rule was brought in in the first place.

Please take a moment of your time to vote on this poll and if you so wish, post your comments about this in this thread. How ever the poll turns out we will go with it, so think carefully before voting as you will not be able to change your answer. So think before voting and if you are on the fence, then read some of the comments this thread will generate.

Thanks for reading and thanks for voting.

I think if people want to stay and get involved, 10 posts isn't going to make a lot of difference. For the same reasons if people wanna leech, finding 10 threads to add a comment in isn't that much aggro either.

Whenever i'd joined forums before this one, they'd always been pretty shit. The older members were generally clicky & didn't have any time for noobs and i didn't think here would be any different. If i'm honest, my plan here was to do my posts, grab my tunes and do one.

The reason this place works so well is because it isn't surrounded by that elitist horseshit and that everyone on here is on a level playing field - old or new, you can have a giggle. I think what i'm trying to say is - I LUV U GUYS!!

    Sorry what was the question....??

Good and honest post dodders - those were my intentions in April 2009

6000 posts later, I still think it's an effective and stable rule which will weed out the leechers - keep it my man!

There won't be a Non-Contributor group any more, well, that's not exactly true, there will be, kind of.

For one thing, I regularly delete 0 posters and those who have remained on 1 or 2 posts for about a month. Which is why you will see the number of members we have here go down on a regular basis.

If we take the 10 posts away, any member who comes on here and doesn't say anything will be monitored and if they remain that way, then they will either be deleted, banned or moved to the non-contributor group.

In a way it's a lot easier to monitor this kind of activity by members when we don't have a 10 post rule, they are much easier to spot and get rid of.

either keep it or make it more, at least the 10 post rule makes them look round the forum first, which then they could become interested in what the forum has to offer, otherwise it will be straight to the downloads and not bothering with any other sections. Can not see any benefit to the site getting rid of it

You have actually got a very good point there. Something I didn't think of originally.

Saying that though, the amount of PM's I get a week by new members asking why they can't access the download forums shows that even with the 10 post rule, they don't bother looking around first.

I would say keep it - I'm going to rip some exclusive stuff when I get the time. Why should some lazy little knob-end just come on, nick and then f off again without even saying thanks or knowing who I am?

And yeah they can do that after 10 posts but they're more likely to be into the forum by that point, and hang around to say thanks.

    i voted to bin it

    reasons...

nothing stopping someone spending 5 mins posting 10 replies to threads to be 'promoted' then go on to leech non stop without posting again.

imo.. bin it and uploaders 'hide' thier links.... people have to post then and say thanks... maybe even get them involded in other threads too..

thoses that are still worried about leeching........ post to the VIP section innit.

They might not look in other sections to get involved if they dont have to.

Also not very fair on us NON-VIP's. If that is the case you would be better of having to pay to join the site

I think before the thread gets messy and we get into a debate about the VIP, I'll nip this one in the bud:

Worth spending the fiver, end of.

Mean that with the greatest of respect Mickey
