2 questions / seminar on dance music

    hi, there!

I am a newcomer in this forum and hope you can help me with some pieces of information. in oldenburg/germany, I work at the institute of music and I currently offer a seminar on the aesthetics of electronic dance music. in the next session we will take a closer look (or: a closer listen) at some genres of dance music including old-school-jungle.

as it is very hard to get valid information on special aspects of club culture I turn to this forum. I have 2 main questions:

    1. I am going to present a 12inch which was released in 1994 on awesome records. it is a remix called "sunshine" by "jo" for "t.h.c". I only found very basic release infos here: http://www.discogs.com/THC-Sunshine-Rem ... ster/82008 .
does anybody know more about the label, the producer t.h.c. or the remixer?

    2. as we know there are several classic breaks samples that are used on a huge pile of records like the famous "amen" break taken from the song "amen, brother" by the winstons (1969). hereテつエs an audio-history of the break: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac .
my question is: what other classic breaks do you know that have penetrated hiphop, jungle etc.?

I would be very happy about your comments!

[welcomewave] to the forum Tommi Here's a few 60's & 70's funk breaks that have been used in jungle that spring to mind - soulpride, james brown - the funky drummer, james brown - tighten up, james brown - give it up or turn it loose, ike turner - the funky mule, lyn collins - think, the meters - here comes the metermen, jimmy mcgriff - the worm. There are loads more but I'm having a mental block right now. I shall come back to this thread later......

T.H.C. is an alias for Slipmatt & Lime, who were better known as SL2 (On A Ragga Tip, DJ's Take Control). The label, Awesome Records, was owned by Slipmatt & Lime. I don't know anything about Jo I'm afraid.

Actually I'm no good with stuff like this, I only love the amen for what it is.
Think I'll Teflon-shoulder (non-stick) this one off to Timeless, who knows his breaks... as I'm sure Haze & billybob2007 do too... not forgetting obviously Rogue_D who knows his stuff

    Found on Discogs about Jo:

    Real Name:
    Jo Millett
    Profile:
Hailing from Ipswich, Jo was one of the 2 female dancers who appeared with SL2 live and in their video's. At the time she was also the girlfriend of DJ Lime from the group. She moved on to produce her own tracks from 1993.

    Hope this helps

A few more tracks I've remembered that feature drum breaks that have been heavily sampled, there are so many more & I have most of them in my sample collection which I don't have access to right now....

    Dennis Coffey - Scorpio
    Kool & The Gang - N.T
    James Brown - Hotpants
    Blowfly - Sesame Street
Fuzzy Haskins -The Fuzz and Da Boog
    Commodores - Assembly Line

Tommi, you may be able to contact Slipmatt on Facebook (Matthew Slipmatt Nelson) or www.canyoufeelitmedia.com . He is usually pretty friendly, so may be able to give you more insight into the THC track.

    2 more questions

    thank you very much, everybody!

great to see how good this forum works. I will use the pieces of information given in my seminar.

I certainly have more questions about jungle. how about these:

    1. what kind of "classic" hardware did jungle producers (letテつエs say: between 1990-93) work with? when did they actually start using software sequencers for triggering hardware on MIDI-base? when could they use computers for editing audio? for example, one of my most favourite records ever was produced by a german artist called christoph de babalon (if youテつエre into it, Iテつエm out of it: http://www.discogs.com/Christoph-De-Bab ... 5243?ev=rr). it was obviously sequenced with an Amigo 500 personal computer around 1994.

    2. I remember the special kind of dancing presented in videos by the members of the prodigy (everybodyテつエs in the place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBYVD1T9gFQ). was this kind of dancing a general style in clubs at the time?

    many greetings,

    tommi

Re: 2 questions / seminar on dance music

Question 1 is definitley one for billybob2007. as for the Prodigy dancing 'style', I was always under the impression that it was random, as Keith & Leroy were always off their nut .
No particular kind of dance was dedicated to the jungle scene (that I am aware of), although an awful lot of head nodding, finger waggling and general boogieing was involved

    Hope this helps

Maybe the dancers on the stage would be dancing like that..

Although I do remember one night in 1992 after having taken a substantial amount of pink champagne (amphetamine) that I seemed to gain 'feet of fire' and possibly was dancing like that.

With regards to the dancing, I couldn't do half the stuff that Leroy does in that vid, but used to indulge in a bit of the 'running on the spot' stuff that you can see around 12 secs into the video! That wasn't uncommon where I lived in the north of England in the early 90's! Hope that helps!
