Been meaning to do a thread like this for ages; post up an oldskool tune that you think is clever/influential in a certain way and explain why!
Undergraduates, The - Space / Into Da Future (Vinyl) at Discogs - for me, the bassline on this makes it sound mellow and slow, yet it's a good amen tearer at 165bpm. Typical Invisible Man tinkling intro but man, them pads ain't half dark mum!
Deep Blue - The Helicopter Tune (Vinyl) at Discogs - not everyones' cup of tea (maybe because it got rinsed too much?) but I remember exactly where and when I heard this for the first time. The construction and new type of drum sample, Blowfly/Sesame Street, changed for me the way tunes were approached, and although it's acknowledged that darkness split the scene, this tune - simplistic in it's nature - heralded a new era for Jungle.
I rarely play it now, but who didn't nod their head when they heard it for the first time on a decent system?
And for my final one, remember hearing my mate playing this on his decks BITD: DJPC - Inssomniak (CD) at Discogs there was 5 of us, all pretty stoned and he stopped the record and spun the vocal bit "Inssomniak! I'm asleep" backwards on the deck and it said exactly the same thingI remember repeatedly asking him to do it again, kept rubbing my eyes and looking for a sneaky button on his mixer. Goddamn if I didn't have a whitey there & then!
