Thumbs up Post Yer Best Mentasm Riffs???

Now throughout my listening experience from hardcore right through to drum & bass, there has been one sound which has always got the hairs on the back of my neck standing up..... the classic mentasm riff as created by Joey Beltram on Second Phase's 'Mentasm'. I can remember reading an interview where Joey said that he created the sound while attempting to emulate the down-tuned guitar sounds of heavy meatallers, Black Sabbath, and in doing so, sparked off a riff which has been nabbed by many different genres of music.

So here's a thread for you to go and post yer favourite mentasm riffs from any era or genre of music.

Now instead of posting the original 'Mentasm' by Second Phase, I'll start off with the 'Beltram & Mundo Remix'.

Nasty Habits 'Here Come The Drumz' The definitive darkcore track.

    Doc Scott 'Unofficial Ghost'.

Digital 'Dennis The Menace'. This riff sounds like angry bees!!!

There are mountains more, but if anyone can throw in some obscurities amongst the classics, then extra kudos to ya's!

Haha! Excellent idea for a thread. There was a period when practically every "rave" track had a mentasm riff. I'll go for a really obvious one for now.

One that was played to death, but still a stone cold classic. Absolutely loved the Beltram and Frank De Wulf mixes too!

Here's a few more 'hoover' anthems.

F.O.L.S. 'Enviromental Health'. This musta sounded well hectic in the mix.

Acen 'Close Your Eyes (Remix I) (Optikonfusion!)'. A stone cold Acen classic here.

DJ SS 'The Pulse (Dub Plate Remixes)'. My favourite mix of 'The Pulse'. Shame it never came out as a vinyl release, as opposed to the 6 tracks a side album release.

I forgot all about the hoover riff in 'The E Face' there, and 'Surgery (Original Mix)' is pure class. Think both tracks directly sample Second Phase's 'Mentasm'?

Some awesome tracks there Shuffleup and Acidman. the Grooverider remix of 'Sinister' is one of my all time favourite uses of the hoover sound (and I reckon the longest too!) and Mundo Muziques' 'Acid Pandemonium' is totally sick. 'Cactus Rhythm's' riff sounds like the one stolen by Cedric Winkleburger on the 'Take It Easy (Remix)'. Nice find.

'Ere's a few more from me. Starting off with an obscurity.....

Neon 'Voices (92 Remixes)' Was a fairly new discovery for me this one. 1992 darkcore in a Belgian stylee.

Hardware 'Night Stalker (DJ SS Remix)' 1993 darkcore from the Face Records crew.

Warped Kore 'The Power' Proper nastiness from the man like Bizzy B.

Enforcer 'Dam Tuff' DJ Lime taking things on a dark tip here.

The House Crew 'We Are Hardcore (Magic-Fantasy Remix)' Classic hardcore in a lighter sounding fashion with Acen on the remix duties.

Tronik House 'Up Tempo (Reese Mix)' Undisputed classic techno/hardcore crossover.

bumping this thread a little.... the mentasm sound is also many times referred to as "the hoover". it came from a patch on the roland alpha juno synthesizer called "whatthe?" if i'm not mistaken. joey beltram didn't actually *create* the sound, but he's probably one of the first people to use it in a track.

for you musicians in here, here's something i found a while ago:

the hoover sample packs for EXS24 and kontakt: Roland Alpha Juno 2 – Hoover Sound Bank | Hardballs Records

a free VST instrument that replicates the hoover sound: Phutura - VST Instrument Plugin for Windows

    have fun!
