Second Hand Record Shops: Good and Bad

In central London theres a good few record shops like Sisterray and Vinyl Junkies with excellent staff who are always willing to help. A small selection of dance tunes on Vinyl in Sisterray, but, Vinyl Junkies is mostly first hand and sells modern underground dance music which I like personally.

On the other hand, you get the stuck up, arrogant, university type, anoraks in Music Exchange, the stores with the sh*tty 'bargain basements' with the lonely guy behind the counter who just wants to die.

Any other recommendations or ones to avoid?

Charity shops. If you've got the patience to flick through mountains of Val Doonican, Rod Stewart, Top of the Pops and various classical shite, there's a few hidden gems to be had.

I found you would go into some of them places and the staff may have attitude, but you'd just tolerate because you found some rare tunes you wanted at a good price lol

I got quite a lot of my vinyl from ebay.. 99p bargains all over the shop if you are lucky enough to find em.
Problem is obviously you cant see the record for correct grading..
9/10 times they were fine but i once recieved a double discer where one of em had a full on 2" crack in the record!
and once some pleb sent me my tune wrapped in a black bin liner instead of a mailer. [-x
Discogs rules but the prices and postage can be a bit pricey.

I went into a charity shop in Richmond about a year ago with my other half and while i was in there i thought i'd have a look at wot records they had and to my total shock there was about 50 ep's all from the 1992 era ie Blame music takes you, Trip II The Moon Parts 1,2,3, Code 071+ mad London Sumtin Remix Plus Many More. So i asked the manager how much she wanted for them and she said that they had been having trouble selling them so give me a £5 for the lot Well I Nearly bit hear hand off i could'nt believe it Only thing was my other half got the right hump coz she had to help me carry the tunes back so she could'nt do anymore shopping which was a result on my part

Re: Second Hand Record Shops: Good and Bad

I used to get loadsa old tunes at a place called Groucho's in Dundee back in the '90's when hardcore was looked down upon as worthless bargain bin fodder. Got my first Reinforced and Shut Up & Dance tunes there very cheap. I also used to buy some goodies from a place here in Aberdeen called The Cavern. It's more of a indie/jazz/rock vinyl shack, but they used to have old rave and jungle in there dirt cheap. Well untill the manager cottened on to the fact that I kept buying so much of the stuff, then the prices suddenly rocketed. £20 for a Bassheads/Utah Saints or somebody like that just 'coz it had a 'rare' Future Sound Of London remix??? Soon moved onto eBay straight after that happened.

I did pick up The House Crew's 'The Theme', Urban Shakedown's 'Some Justice' and Doc Scott's 'N.H.S. Volume 2' for 50p each from Cash Converters about 6 years ago!

You lucky, lucky man!! I had a similar experience in a second hand shop in Bradford in the late 90s. I found a few old 12s on Suburban Base & Dee Jay, and the guy next to me in the queue saw what I was buying started chatting to me. He was bringing a box full of old hardcore and jungle 12s, got in an argument with the shop as they were only offering him a tenner, so I offered him 20 and he took me up on it. I later learned from the staff in the shop that he'd been a fairly big local DJ in the early to mid 90s, but was now living back with his mum in Pately Bridge and selling off his records and DJ gear to support a smack habit. His loss was my gain!!
