Re: Who got to much praise

I thought for his style of MC'ing he was definately the best. He used to MC for Nicky Blackmarket and they did some good sets. He had a decent voice, spoke clearly and would know when to hold it down. I guess out of his peers Shabba, Skibadee etc he was the best over the Jump Up style of Dnb and crowd hyping at big raves. Different strokes for different folks and what not, but he was decent. I prefer a more minimal style of MC'ing myself. He was prob the top DnB rave MC back then, so the fact that he died young at the top of his game has earned him a "Legend" status. Not everyone who has died gets the same props to be honest. They still get mentioned, but not as much. He is like the 2Pac of Jungle I guess.

I'm prob gonna offend a few people. but i have always wondered about geezers like Sy, Seduction, Stu Allan etc. Older DJ's who have been there since day one and DJ'ing for 20 odd years. I wonder whether they actually like the music they are playing. I would have thought deep down they think its shit kiddies music, esp as they started spinning hip hop, soul, house, acid etc and then the music they are on now couldn't be more opposite than what they do now. I say fair play to them in a way as its no different to being a commercial Dj in a ritzy type club and they have mortgages, bills etc and are on good money so why stop at the top?!? Just a thought/ random tangent (waits for onslaught of backlash)

I often wondered about Stu Allan Timeless, great DJ imo and had some great nights listening to him but I just wondered whether he loved the music that he was playing. Don't really agree about Sy & Seduction though as bitd Sy was there almost from the start and Seduction made many a good track that became defining tunes bitd.

To throw a spanner in the works and I'll defo get slated for this but Bukem was one for me that got too much praise, noone will change my mind, never rated him and never will

i used to rate Sy, Stu Allan and Seduction up to the mid 90's when happy hardcore went silly, i was making reference to the music they play and produce now (Upfront Uk Happy Hardcore or whatever its called). I just can't imagine 40+ guys from their musical backgrounds really that into it deep down (I.e they have gone from being involved in some seriously cutting edge scenes to now playing sped up trance riffs and pop vocals at 180bpm).

Re: Who got to much praise

Bukem's an aquired taste. I have always been into Bukem myself, even from when he played Hardcore and in 93 his sets took on another level from most dj's of the era so I got right into it. He was doing own thing which I liked. Nice minimal rolling style with nice ambient sounds etc. Even at school when me and my mates used to lend each other tapes, Bukem and Rider were never that popular (people like Hype, Slipmatt, Kenny Ken, Brockie etc were amongst our group).

But I do admit in the later 90's/ early 2000's he get a bit wishy washy even for my tastes (I loved the whole "Speed" era that he was involved in with Fabio, DJ Lee etc). But in the last few years he's back on track and GLO has put out some good stuff since it relaunched about 2 years ago. I saw him play in Hitchin a few months back and he and Conrad smashed it. The stuff he was playing was a bit jazzier, funkier and he even dropped a wicked new remix of Exodus Lion Awakes! I read an interview with him where he stated he has started playing for the dancefloor again and not himself as he had been doing!

your prob bang on the mark there never thought to deep why they played the cheesy stuff in the later years but like you put they may not have a passion for any of it and its just a wage for them at the end of the day.
Rated all 3 of em BITD but by mid 94 i'd had a gut full of em and for people like me dropping out of the scene there was some one new comin in so dJ'S & promoters would not see a drop off inthe crowds so they prob thought we all love the cheesy shit cant call it Happy for me as in 93 i thought that was the happy side of it with the darkside in full forcewith a full line up playin a mix of dark and happy it made for a good varied night. By 94 it gone over board and lost its origins from were it started.

Fair enough E-Vapor-8 & Hypnotic ST8 were a bag of shite but they made some great tracks aswell such as Activ-8, Frequency, infiltrate 202 & Armageddon to mention a few.

As for 2 Bad Mice they made loads of great tracks, & then even more great tracks as Kaotic Chemistry. Not to mention all the classic remixes they've done. IMO 2 Bad Mice were top draw

i know 2 bad mice are well respected and there work is good, but for some reason i just never liked it really. I'd almost go as far as to say that i dont like them because they were commerical in a sense and there style of are hardcore i'm not a fan of. "Bomb Scare" & "2 Bad Mice" both crap tunes i hate. I'm also not a big fan of Blame either or Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era...name is just bleedin silly as it is

2 Bad Mice were quality, I liked most of their tunes in 91-92 (Bombscare, Waremouse, Hold It Down, 4 Bad Remixes) seminal UK breakbeat releases i.m.o, plus the Kaotic Chemistry stuff was wicked (nice chopped up roughneck breakbeats). Again the same with Sonz... I can understand people getting a bit sick of "Far Out", but stuff such as "Peace & Lovism" (esp the 4 Hero Mix) are tunes!

Sonz of a loop will always be remembered for Far Out 'cus it did so well in the charts, but there's so many other quality tracks that he did, aswell as what he did as Droppin' Science. Here's one of my favs....

I could post all day, "R Yeah" was another wicked one he did in 93, LTJ Bukem played it at Universe "Big Love". Danny Breaks was a wicked producer, I liked some of the early Droppin Science's as well (good 93-94 dnb). But people have solely judged him on "Far Out" - was reading an interview where he said he didn't like it and made it for the money. I think its a good tune, heard it a bit too much now - but I loved it when I first heard back in the day.

Re: Who got to much praise

lots of mention of Dougal - who was overly praised, but what of DJ Vibes? Now don't get me wrong - he produced some great tracks like 'Obsession' and 'Ravers Choice 1', but with that came the absolute cheese. And his double act with MC Live-Lee? Not good. Definitely rode their luck these two in my ops.

    Who else? ~x(

Well..I didn't rate Grooverider too highly. DJ Sy was okay sometimes and just plain crap others. Apart from some semi-decent scratching his mixing can be dubious at best. Sometimes he barely mixes at all just cuts in records, which is fine when presented with other facets of mixing, but he wasn't exactly a Brisk or Seduction in terms of consistency. I did feel some labels like Movin Shadow, Reinforced and Formation were perhaps overly praised on the whole. Like any label they produced some great, some good and some garbage. I always felt Basement was the best label, they had a distinct, crisp and very technical sound - and you notice they very rarely featured gimmicky or unneccessary chipmunked vocals that become annying over time. Sometimes those vocals capture the vibe just right, it varies.

I couldn't stand a lot of the stuff on Boogie Beat - very overrated label. Also Labello Blanco. And 786 Approved were a bit dodgy on the whole. I don't know so much about over-praising, but these I definitely don't rate as highly as perhaps others...
