depends on what the praise is for. Hype back in the day made wicked tunes but his Djing was always a bit of a let down (mixing). Ellis Dee was another Dj who I always seem to hear having a 'mare, maybe I just heard him on bad nights.

I'll back up the poster who said he didn't like Stevie hyper D, couldn't stand him myself. I did see him stick the nut on an eskimo sound guy, onstage at the island in ilford which was quite funny though. Didn't like Shabba either.

I agree. I like Drum & Bass, but prefer the MC's to be more on the minimal tip i.e GQ, Conrad, Warren G, Moose, etc.

I heard a set of UNCZ (that is Skibadees crew) and it was non-stop chat over the music! What about letting the music breathe. I realised it isn't Jump Up/ Wobble DnB I don't like - but more the MCs chatting over it. Especially all these wannabe chav MC's who try to copy UNCZ etc. A mate of mine who is well respected DnB MC said "Its embarrassing and sounds like 2 chavs arguing"

I'm also not a big fan of Blame either or Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era...name is just bleedin silly as it is
I played at an event not so long ago where 2 bad mice were on directly afterwards, and he turned up with an acer laptop with an apple sticker on it (audience side) a native instruments usb deck control unit and a generic pc mixing prog, started to plug in his shit and then dropped the deck controller onto the mixer quickly reducing the master level of the venue to a whisper ~x( ( fucking mug ) ~x( oh and they were (one clumsey rodant) not two bad mice....
i was under the impression that there were 2 of them well if so only one turned up and ruined the last portion of my set.............as for his music some pivotal tunes but none of which are in my top 100 lol.

I agree that dougal was over-rated around the 1994 time, also fabio and grooverider received far too much hype, plenty of djs that never got the attention they deserved.
Big up all crew no matter where ya comin from!

Dougal for me is one DJ who is very overrated. Ive got one set somewhere from around 1995 time where a tune is playing and he just stops it halfway through and puts another tune on, was absolutely shocking to hear.

To an extent Vibes as well, I think hes a pretty decent DJ to be fair but alot of tunes that he was to do with like the ravers choice series it was Wishdokta who was the brains behind most of the tracks. To add as well him and Livelee produced one of the worst tunes ever in 10 years of hardcore.

Like alot of people from sets ive heard ive never rated Grooverider much at all. Same with Sy, always thought out of him and Unknown that Unknown always made the better tunes and played better sets and was the better scratcher as well.

Jumpin Jack Frost is one whos overrated for me as well. Always loved his tune selection but his mixing left alot to be desired.
    REMEMBER...KEEP IT UNDERGROUND!!!

What about Mastervibe? I always like his sets. Was he in high demand BITD? or was he just an average DJ?

I really really disliked him but other mates though he was the tits, just goes to show how diverse it was back then.

I just can't imagine 40+ guys from their musical backgrounds really that into it deep down (I.e they have gone from being involved in some seriously cutting edge scenes to now playing sped up trance riffs and pop vocals at 180bpm).

Understand what you're saying completely...by contrast, I wasn't a professional DJ, producer or organiser...in other words I wasn't attached to the scene in any way other than a Raver and enthusiast...but even by 1998 I was completely disillusioned with the music; I had bought some decks in '97 with every intention of trying to break the scene as DJ, but the music I was playing was the Happy breakbeat stuff of 94/95...a year later I was starting to collect the Hardcore of 93 and before. Why? Because I was totally sick and turned off by the direction Hardcore had took by mid-95; the music lost itself. The DJs became vehicles for a terribly mutated sound that even then was too much to bear; let alone this pap that they play now (how can they???)...I think the clubs got bigger, the audiences got bigger and the Hardcore scene became commercialised...all those tawdy Bonkers CDs, even advertised on TV.....so by the end of 1995 I don't think I rated any of the producers, DJs or otherwise because they "sold out" in my opinion, they made commercially-driven music....I was only 21 in 1997 and I couldn't stomach the crap they had been producing for the last year and a bit.....even worse was yet to come!!! The last tape pack I bought was a Technodrome pack in early '97, which apart from a great M-Zone tape I regretted buying...simply trying to force myself to like the harder Techno/Hardcore because the Happy stuff was so shit. I was never much a fan of the Industrial styles, DJ Producer was an exception; his sets around this time were excellent. So the point you made about 40+ individuals having passion for this diluted garbage they play hits home; I don't believe they do either, it has; as someone else mentioned, become a job - pay the mortgage, feed the family; routine and familiarity. I think Hardcore imploded in 1995. I don't rate anything that came after...
