Question I found out 20 years later...

... that the goalposts in Italia '90 were hexagonal/octagonal.

My mate told me when we were having a few brewskies earlier in the week and said that England hit the post in the semi-final against Germany; if the goalposts were traditionally circular then the ball would have gone over the line.

Is there any evidence of this? I can't remember us hitting the post and certainly don't remember strange goalposts - had a look on t'interweb but can't find anything.

    Anyone?

Tony Adams was quite partial to hitting the bar as well.

Nope, Chris Waddle hit the post in extra time - as did the Jeermans. The bar shot was in the first half.

As for octagonal/hexagonal post thing, i'm not having that...

If it were true then i reckon we'd have never heard the end of it from the redtops.

They went on for years about how the Yanks wanted bigger goals in '94 and that didn't even happen.

I think that shape is a square

I was just guessing what it could be. there is no way that FIFA would allow non circular goal posts

yes they are octaganol which was what i original said they were, things circular do not have any sides and you can see that they have 6.

Not to get picky mate but that makes them hexagonal.

Well, after a bit of research i found this - bottom of 7th paragraph:

World Cup 2010: Slovakia 0-2 Paraguay | Twohundredpercent

Tho i must point out that yer mans original arguement was for hexagonal/octagonal goalposts. Could it just be a Villa fan trying to prove he knows word with more than 2 syllables?
