    Can anyone recommend

some good tycoon/city building/micro management type games - nothing too spec-heavy. I don't care how old it is within reason.

    Any suggestions?

    Hey dodders,

I like these sort of games too.

Ive actually got rollercoaster tycoon 3 right next to me, i also brough the expansion packs rollercoaster tycoon wild (safari park) and rollercoaster tycoon soaked (water park).

Great simple games, i found sim city got too complex in later versions.

You could get tropico 3 but thats a little more complicated then the rollercoaster tycoon series.

Get the rollercoaster tycoon and the expansion packs series and have fun. Built a massive theme park and charge tons for food and drink and balloons

, well thats what i did anyway.

Put chips stall next to drink stall. Put extra salt on the chips so the ppl will go right next door and buy a drink

Finished RCT3 a couple of months back - really enjoyed it. Started to do my own park with everything unlocked but i'm not creative enough to do my own coasters and got frustrated.

Missus bought me Tropico 3 for the 360 for Xmas and played it solid for 3 weeks - loved it. Might try and find the first 2 - played the first one years ago but went over my head at the time.

Agree about Sim City - got to a point in the last one where it just got too much to cope with.

Like your thinking tho fella. I like the city building thing like in Caesar & Age of Empires etc but not not too keen on the combat side - mainly coz i get my arse kicked!!

If u haven't played it, the newest Anno game is well worth a look. You can turn the combat off and just do the whole resource-gathering thing.

If you've got any other suggestions mate, i'm all ears...

Your making me want to load up RCT3 again mate, i loved making different parts of my theme park have themes and just watching the money roll in. But like you im rubbish at creating my own coasters too

    How about this, the Sims?
Its a bit like what you want, build your character, build house, etc etc. Its not bad, i dont know how the later versions are though. Probably suffered from the same thing as sim city though, got too complicated as the versions came out.

I have to say though, i was playing it (the sims), build some nice extensions on my house, nice games room with pool table, great big kitchen and bath room, got married, had a good job(sports star) then i actually thought sod this, my actual life is shit compared to this game i better concentrate on it and i never played it again

Havent heard of anno, maybe i'll give it a try at somepoint. My power supply is dying on my pc and barely powers the hard drive to run video clips so will have to get that sorted first.

I played tropica 3 on the demo only. How is the real game? I liked all the options you could do but found the terrain a bit of a b*tch(hard to lay things down).

    cheers osr - d/ling now.

Mike: The missus has got all the Sims games - she luvs em. Good fun for a while but don't seem to go anywhere imo.

I don't remember having any trouble with building placement in Tropico (360 version). Can't check coz i traded it in months ago. What i will say is that if you take the time to get through the fisrt couple of missions then its well worth it. Loved the whole Cold-War, political spin on it. Build a tourist resort and piss the Commies off, have a hundred farms and the Yanks get the hump. Absolute quality soundtrack as well.

Exactly the sort of thing i had in mind when i started this thread: city building and managing without having too much combat.

Well i only ever played tropico(360) via the demo and i really enjoyed it maybe i should seek out a copy.
Can you play sandbox mode, where you can just build and play not doing any missions?

Also civilisation IV, have you played it? What did you think? Its sort of like a building game.

Yeah mate there's a sandbox. Pretty sure the only restrictions to start with are the islands you can use. U can get it off Amazon for £14 new - can't argue with that.

Played Civ IV on the 360. Quite enjoyed it but i'm not madkeen on the turned-based thing - never have been.

    Mike: Few general tips.

When you pick your attributes for your leader try & keep them mission specific. Saying that tho there's one that relates to farming concessions or export prices - always had that in there if i could.

Growing tobacco is the way forward, if the lie of the land permits - and once you reach the stage where you're getting industrial, get a couple of cigar factories on the go.

Use the Edicts - its what they are there for - can really help you out.

Get your own education system up and running asap - the locals wont be able to do the more advanced jobs without it and you'll have to rely on outsiders coming to live on your island, or importing specialists, which can cost a fortune.

Get a Diplomatic Embassy (i seem to remember being able to get one for free using one of the edicts). Really helps early on with the cost of housing. Talking of housing - don't worry about it too much at the start, they'll whinge a bit but you've got more important stuff to worry about.

Hope that helps. Let me know how your getting on.

cheers, im only playing the demo and playing it like sandbox mode.
Dont really care about missions (same thing in sim city, theme park etc) lol, i just want to build and build and deal with the daily problems.

So far my town is a shithole, lol. Need to make it better somehow. However the demo has tons of things cut out of the options etc.

Ultimately i want a nice tourist destination. Loads of hotels, casinos, restaurants right by the beach
Then do like a town place for tourist and locals then just a normal local part and a farm/factory part.

All this possible, I never understood the sandbox saying but i do now. LOL like giving a kid a bucket and spade and saying to them 'knock your self out'

Fair play. Like i said the only thing i seem to remember cut out of the sandox is your choice of islands. Don't quote me on that tho.

Oh, forgot to mention: CAR PARKS!! Most improtant. Always leave space for a couple round your main hives of activity....
