    Emulators

For those that don't know, an emulator is a simple program that basically makes your computer think that it's another piece of hardware.
Therefore, old console games can be played on your computer!
Here's a small list of what is available through an emulator:
    Code:
    Nintendo
    › GameCube
    › Nintendo 64
    › Gameboy
    › Gameboy Advance
    › Super Nintendo
    › Nintendo NES
    › Nintendo DS
    › Nintendo Wii
    › Virtual Boy
    Sony
    › Sony Playstation
    › Sony Playstation 2
    › Sony Playstation 3
    › Sony PSP
    Microsoft
    › Microsoft XBox
    › Microsoft XBox 360
    Sega
    › Sega Dreamcast
    › Sega Saturn
    › Sega Genesis
    › Sega Master System
    › Sega Game Gear
    Arcade
    › MAME
    › Nebula
    › Kawaks
    › Other Arcade
    Non PC Emulators
    › Macintosh Emulators
    › Mobile Emulators
    More Emulators
    › Computer Emulators
    › PC-Engine Emulators
    › Wonderswan Emulators
    › Atari 2600 Emulators
    › Atari Jaguar Emulators
    › MSX Emulators
    › Amiga Emulators
    › NeoGeo Pocket Color
    › Misc Emulators
I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to these and have a seperate HD for most of the above... I have about 20Gb of MAME Arcade games alone

I also have most Playstation 1 games, which if I may add, run very nicely

If anyone would like to know how to start playing retro games for free on your PC within 20 minutes, let me know.

Can be a tricky setup for some people, but with a little patience & logic, it can get done very easily

    Re: Emulators

I have the MAME32 and ZSNES emulators.

The MAME set up was a complete cow to do but i now have over 6000 playable games from the arcade game era but my MAME is probably slightly out of date as they are always adding more n more games too it. Also its pretty sweet as it allows you to select the world or jap versions of the game and the countless bootlegged versions too.

Cool, which Amiga emulator do you use and where did you get it from ?
As she lay there dozing next to me, one voice inside my head kept saying, "Relax... you are not the first doctor to sleep with one of his patients," but another kept reminding me, "Howard, you are a veterinarian."

The Amiga emu is a bugger to run - need an image file of the Amiga kickstart ROM, which aren't that easy to get - I found one with a Rapidshare Search though

Not for a few days mate, I have a 'Gaming' extra hard drive which is in the loft at the mo' and then I'll have to run the emulator and try and remember how I set it up in the first place... think there's a few tricky dll file plug-ins in there too... or that one could be the PSX, can't recall

I'll e-mail ya eventually with this info mate, then copy + paste it onto here should anyone else be interested

This emulator lets u play all the games that used various versions of the SCUMM engine (such as Monkey Island / Day of the Tentacle / Maniac Mansio / Sam & Max etc).

I find most better than newer games
So many original ideas back then - hardly any these days.

there's a number of reasons for this mate:

the games of today are probably ten thousand times more powerful than they were BITD, and you're used to today's graphics, sound & AI

BITD when we were kids the games were still in their infancy, and it was the novelty that we actually HAD games that seemed like we were having a good time with them, but not so much nowadays

the pure simplicity of the games was actually the appeal of them BITD - this worked out quite well, as the programmers were very limited with the soft/hard ware they could use. I remember the first time I saw a Nintendo NES (not SNES) game pad which had more than one button it - I nearly had a heart attack and said back then why do you need all those buttons, as it just complicates things!

Yeah but there's nothing to the zx games, at least there's something to the current games! I reckon in 25 years from now people will still dust of the GTA games & not be bored with them, i know i will!

Most of the older games were really hard to finish & were worth the money - not these days.
Plus a lot of the games really made u use your brain (like the monkey island type games or early adventure games like hobbit) - most games these days are run around blowing things up - no wonder the countries in a state

    Re: Emulators

When I found out that I could play all my fave games through MAME it changed my world. It's great to play the originals rather than re-makes. I also think its great that the snes and megadrive etc can live on long after the hardware has gone.

SCUMMVM is technically not an emulator, it's a multi-platform reimplementation of the SCUMM engine. </technical rant> .
All those lucasarts adventure games were awesome back in the day, it's a shame they stopped making them

Anybody here emulate the Nintendo 64?
