First half we were playing well, holding the lions share of possession, the goal was a result of some lovely interplay to James Potten who drove the ball in, nice goal and we looked in good shape. It was a good contest and not would anyone would class as a dirty game. The number 9 for Redditch was seemingly getting caught offside a lot and getting a bit aggressive in to the challenges with Bartley, at this point aggressive but not crazy.
However, crazy came along on early on in the second half, this is my recollection, (so if it needs correction please let me know!)I believe one of our players was shoved down (Bartley) for a penalty by the Redditch number 9, there was then a con flab where both sets of players were surrounding the ref, the Redditch 9 then proceeded to punch the referee (edited Mickeygee was right on this!). After being restrained, he then ran up to the changing room, slammed at least one door and a number of club officials and stewards followed them.
The referee then suspended the match, after much discussion the players returned to the changing room. I was standing next to 2 FA Officials who were friends of the ref. I asked them if the game needed to be called off and one of them went in to speak to the referee, however the game was eventually called off. The police also arrived at the ground and arrested the player.
I do understand that what the Redditch player did was totally wrong and I'm sure they will take action with the number 9. There is no excuse for striking a ref and it shows a total lack of respect for the game. There were FA Officials there who were able to substitute the referee or one of the assistants, to me it does feel like allowing the game to stop means the game will only be remembered for this player effectively ending their career instead of allowing the game to be completed, there were a number of Redditch fans who travelled a round trip of about 160 odd miles and they were not responsible for the act, just as I believe their team and officials were also pretty appalled too.
While I'm unhappy with the abandonment I blame the number 9 more than the referee, he must realise what he did was unacceptable. I'd like to know why the game could not have been continued and if the game will be replayed or rewarded to Chesham, answers on a postcard I guess...
