Stopping Illegal File sharing, A Good Or Bad Thing?

With all the recent talk of file hosts closing and changing how they work and now Torrent sites and their software ceasing to exist. The days of filesharing content are not necessarily numbered as there will always be something new coming along, but do you think it's a good or bad thing to knock it on the head completely?

We all know record companies and film studios are greedy, but there are those on the opposite end of the scale in that they don't have the millions freely available to them to get out music and film. Smaller studios are not immune to the filesharing sites and software.

I will freely admit that I have done it, but I will also say that if I stream a film and I like it, I will buy it when it comes out. Music is different and while I have in the past got a few bits and pieces, It's very very rare I do it now and will purchase the music I like.

I'm all for psychical forms of media. When you go/went to a shop to buy an album or film it meant something, you were getting something you actually liked and wanted to own. Now because of filesharing you have what I call the "download syndrome" where by because it's free, you will download just about anything. Along with your much cherished Public Enemy album, you have the greatest hit songs of the movies. Music collections for people these days make no sense because they can get anything for free they feel they must get it, even if they have no liking for what it is.

I would be quite happy to do away with all forms of illegal downloading and get back to those physical forms of media, owning something you like, something you want. We have a generation now growing up and missing out on all this because of download stuff for free.

I would like people's thoughts on this.

Me personally, i only download music that i want... Which is mainly Oldskool & Techno from the 90's... & film sound tracks that are rare or cost stupid amounts to own!

I buy music that i really want even if it's available as a free download.

Now films on the other hand... I check IMDB for new releases & if i like some i will find them & download them but it's very rare that i buy them, although i will if i want them, generally on Blu-Ray.

I'm not too pleased with everything shutting down, it just makes it harder to find what i want to download... There's a site i download from with only Filesonic links which means everything on the site is inaccessible now But thankfully i went into my Paypal & stopped the monthly subscription charge

I suppose we'll just have to wait & see what becomes of this...

I think that for the stuff we have on the site it should be available for free as most of the stuff is now deleted so Discogs/Ebay etc is the only way of actually owning the music in it's physical form - vinyl, tape or cd.

For new music albums i will download the album for free and if i like it i will buy the cd if i don't like it i will delete it off my PC - it's like a try before i buy thing.

With films i would rather buy the dvd if i'm honest and with some music like hardcore breaks i legally buy the mp3s/wavs or if it's available on vinyl i will buy that.

I also download albums that i have the cd already of so it saves me a job of ripping them

I think that once the whole hysteria calms down we will be back to how it was before

I`m a pirate since the 80s and always be
But nowdays every little wanker can get the latest stuff by a click of a mouse.
I hope its all going back to the underground again now. So only the ones who really know can get the warez.
I do it like this: Games for example: If I really love a game, I get it mostly some days or even weeks bfore the official shop date. But I BUY IT ANYHOW! I love to support little indie developers.
But big players like Activision or EA, I really give a fuck!

A GAME WORTH PLAYING - IS A GAME WORTH BUYING!

The magic of todays scene releases is mostly gone, coz there are no cracktros anymore:-(
BRING BACK THE CRACKTROS AND DONT CARE ABOUT THE STUPID KIDS MOANING ABOUT THEM!

    I`M A PIRATE DAMMIT!

I never download any films though or games. Especially since watching that copy of Predators you uploaded a while back. Like staring out the window at midnight for two hours...

I watch films on Sky & buy all my video games, just music that's downloaded.

Downloads can be good in a way as you can find stuff you would have never heard / seen (places like avaxhome.ws for eg which has all sorts on it).
Anything I really like I usually support the artist in getting it - it's not often these days I like new stuff, but there is the odd bit.

Any films I really like usually get added to birthday/xmas lists, so again, anything really worth having will get bought.

I don't download anything at all. I have always preferred to own physical copies of whatever i want. not from a moral pov, just the way i like it.

Glad you brought Public Enemy up because

Chuck D, leader of Public Enemy, vehemently opposes what the industry is trying to do.
"Technology giveth and it taketh away, and the industry knows this," Chuck D said. "The horseshoe makers probably got upset at the train manufacturers because (the new industry) took away their transport dominance, just as the train manufacturers probably got mad at the airline industry."
"I think this expands artistry and it's about adjustment," he said.
"As an artist representing an 80-year period of black musicianship, I never felt that my copyrights were protected anyway," Chuck D said. "I've been spending most of my career ducking lawyers, accountants and business executives who have basically been more blasphemous than file sharers and P2P. I trust the consumer more than I trust the people who have been at the helm of these companies.
"The record industry is hypocritical and the domination has to be shared. P2P to me means 'power to the people,'" Chuck D said. "And let's get this to a balance, and that's what we're talking about."
I already brought most the Public Enemy albums & ill still pick up a 12" if I see one (although you wont find any 12s in your local HMV anymore). It wasnt my idea to replace records with a bunch of O's & 1's limited to 16 bits & then try & replace CDs with the inferior mp3. Like Puffa I watch movies on Sky so why should i pay for a DVD, just downloaded & watched the new Jonny English film, would have been gutted if I paid £12 for that.

15 years ago you could record a film onto a VHS in your living room, take the cassette out the player & then go watch it in your bedroom on your other video player. Now with the sky plus recorder you cant even do that. We have paid are sky bill & paid for the sky box, but these bitches wont put a usb socket on the front for you to transfer files around.

I do feel for some of the artists but it seems to be the middlemen who are against filesharing, 20 years ago the US government where scared of Rap but now its alright as long as you pay for it.

Look at reggae, killed by copywrite.

Raves used to be free until the Criminal Justice Bill came along

Theres no pirate radio round here, there is 20 music channels on TV but they all play Gaga/Rihanna/Gay-Z all day.

Fuck the industry, Big up Bandcamp.

Free party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia also Hip-Hop block partys in the Bronx & Reggae Sound System culture. Maybe raves were not all free but SUAD still felt the need to make that track in protest to overpriced Raves.

I dont live in Essex , my point is that we have to pay a TV licence which covers radio aswell but we have to liten to top 40/classical. Yes DJ Hype has a show on Kiss FM but 12 midnight on a weekday is not good enough.

There may be 120 million movie channels but they all play the same films, lots of repeats. No we dont need a VHS but the point is we used to have the freedom to record what we wanted & watch it where we want. They have also made everybody switch over to digital TV, fair enough it seems like a good idea, but they turned off 1-5 which if you dont have Sky/Cable only leaves Free view, which sometimes doesnt even work properly.

ok, skipping through that link, it seems you mean a free rave as ' "free" from the restrictions of the legal club scene'?? in that case it seems your talking about the hippys / new age travelers / unorganised type parties in fields.... not raves.... and as the criminal justice bill came into effect in 1994.... and not 1989/90/91..... there is no way i could have seen the junglists wantin to 1 foot skank in a muddy field surrounded by unwashed hippies...... no way i wanted that then
imo. the bill was a GOOD thing. it made sure clubs and venues were SAFE and cut down on muggy promoters rippin ya off in a wank venue....that happened ALOT!

the age we live in.... you can have a sky box and tv in every bloody room init so i dont get the point there.

as for vhs you can record whatever and watch anywhere..........

    Copywright Laws for one..
It is legal in the United States and United Kingdom to record live TV for personal use. In U.S. law, recording TV programs for later viewing is protected under "Fair Use." It is legal to physically give out copies of TV recordings to other people, but it is illegal to distribute those copies through peer-to-peer filesharing on the Internet.
    Remember Bob Monkhouse ??
"His private film collection was the cause of a court case at the Old Bailey in 1979 after he was charged with attempting to defraud film distributors, but he was acquitted. Many of the films in his collection were seized and destroyed (including what would have been the only surviving copies of many films) before the acquittal."

    hope that helps

I know your not having a dig, feel free to be objective thats what this site is for m8.

What if you did want to one foot skank in the mud, proper promoters probably is a good thing & safer but that should be our choice.

Renegade is great but its no good if im in a car or at work, the good thing about pirates was that you could listen to em on any old radio receiver (if your in the right area of course), alright you can listen to internet radio through your iphone but youv still got to splash out with the cash to buy one, but even then if you want to listen to it on big speakers round your mates house you have got to carry phono leads around with you all the time.

Yes you can have a skybox in every room, but you cant just buy another box & set it up, you have to pay more on your bill for channels you have already paid for.

So Monkhouse was acquited but he still had films destroyed yet didnt break any laws
