Exclamation URGENT - The Demise of Megaupload,Filesonic etc

    Hmm..

So the Feds/SOPA have now appeared to have forced the shut down of Filesonic. Who's next - Rapidshare, Sendspace... Mediafire???

I've been thinking about this just now and I've just realised that if the likes of Mediafire and Soundcloud go kaput too, then this will be curtains for ALL mixes/tracks etc stored in the data cloud (and not just this site either), which will be such a shame, as they are fantastic resource for dance days gone by. I want to avoid being alarmist, or trigger off a sudden rash of 'panic downloading' of tunes, LOL, I'm just pointing things out and saying we need to be aware of what has taken place recently..

Megaupload contained a high % of (highly publicised) copyrighted material, making a rod for their own backs, whereas Mediafire/Soundcloud is largely used for legitimate sharing of files personal files etc, with a smaller % of copyrighted materials. As it only takes one instance of a single copyrighted item i.e. Lady Gaga's latest single (violently spewing up at the thought) being shared without permission. This could potentially render sites like this one, OSA, HTID etc virtually useless

I am wondering whether the site owner(s) have any contingency in mind, or whether other IT savvy users have ideas of how backup plan could be put in place??

ps Thinking outside of the dance music (sharing) scene, people legitimately use these sites to promote/distribute commercial, paid for material and are therefore vital for business success.

    Any thoughts?

For starters we aren't doing anything illegal here as all downloads are either from labels which are no more or gone beyond the idea of copyright in it's current form of hype.

The problem we have, like you say is if the file hosts go by by, the download sections will more or less be pretty useless to anyone and will serve no purpose other than a "this is how it used to be" situation. I have thought about this of course and the only proper way of doing things would be a dedicated server with ample space, speed and bandwidth to keep everyone happy. The trouble with this is that a dedicated server will cost between £100 and £500 a month to run, so for folks to use it the site would have to become a pay site to cover the costs. If you want the memories you will have to pay for it.

I'm not too worried though to be honest, when P2P was going tits up, everyone thought it was the end of everything, the party was finally over, then up popped another solution. I can see the same think happening here. It's very early days and of course people are a little worried and panicky, but give it a month or two and things will probably back to normal.

This could also be the start of a major push to control the net as we know it by the powers that be. They already want us all to put all our files etc onto cloud services instead of having hard drives. Computers are coming out now which are just cloud based, games are going this way and films, music etc etc are also going this way.
